A small stack of Fiestaware. There is a printed label from a label maker on top of a yellow plate that says "FUCK"

“No one is wired to live with sustained stressors and traumas in our life,” Hilado said. “Prolonged chronic stress [and]exposure to trauma does change how we see ourselves, how we see the people around us, how we see our futures.”

The Baby’s First Years (BFY) study is a first-of-its-kind randomized controlled trial focused on understanding the causal impact of providing an unconditional cash transfer to low-income mothers during their children’s early years.

The one time I met Paul Vallas was at a conference and after a very brief conversation he showed me a plan for a "reform school" project he was pitching.

The man was carrying plans for a jail for children on his person and just...showing it to people.

That guy came really close to being mayor.

Actually, it really matters whether your electeds are progressive. We are often frustrated on the left at what electeds can deliver, but we have to remember moments like this. Paul Vallas would NOT have created ICE free zones.

HAPPENING NOW — This morning, Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order establishing “ICE-free zones.”

“That means that city property and unwilling private businesses will no longer serve as grounds for these raids,” Johnson said to applause.

I bet there's lots of people who came to your event or will be at the next one who would love to connect you with whatever they're doing. And probably people who are showing up for the first time to do a thing who are feeling connected bc they met you. Just a guess.
denali.bsky.social
I think that's pretty typical for the hard part and it's also the work. It's like ok I did one thing what's the next thing? And everything is changing. Plugged in can be jumping into something or connecting/extending something or whatever you want it to be.
denali.bsky.social
You did something really awesome based on what you know how to do and created a model for other people who wouldn't know how to start.

I guess I just wanted to say thank you and that it's ok not to be everything.

And over time it gets easier to do really out there things. Choosing your choices in a world that doesn't make sense isn't going to look coherent from the outside. That's why you have to sit with your big moments and think "well, I suppose the constant is me and I guess this is what I'm about"
denali.bsky.social
The world is an unknowable place.

I mean...get in the time machine and tell past me "so that time you adopted a teenager" or "during your campaign for city council" or "and then after you dropped out of high school and college" and in the abstract it's baffling but it mostly made sense at the time

And yes I'm intentionally talking about pushing babies instead of punching Nazis because regular ass civilian life is some of the most brave and beautiful stuff we do and we do not live in a world that values it enough.

By Feb 2021, the outside world was working meant that to have the things I wanted most I would have to do the thing not at all like I planned. I am sparing the details but trust me it got weird! But it was right.

You move in the world and when the world in unknowable, you can still know you.

I got this book during my second pregnancy and it was a great breakdown of here's what's going on, here's what that might look or feel like, and here's what options you might have. It taught me about babies but more about how to engage with how I might experience big things mostly out of my control.

Whenever a whole bunch of advice is flying at your head in a moment of urgency it's a great time to reflect on what you personally are all about so you can process and incorporate or adapt the things you like as easily as possible.

My library has the family preparedness plan presentation printed out in a binder that's sitting on a table in the children's section.
A white binder with a cover sheet in it from the city of Chicago that says family preparedness plans stay informed, prepared and connected and it has an icon of a checklist on it

Until June 24, the rule for holding immigrants at Broadview was 12 hours. Then the Trump Admin quietly changed the rule, increasing the max to 72 hours. And still they're holding people beyond that time as well.

There’s no medical staff or services at Broadview. No food preparation. No beds. That’s all by design because the facility was created for holds less than 12 hours.

Wadee AlFayoumi was born a few weeks before my middle kid.

He was a Muslim and a Palestinian-American and in 2023 he was brutally murdered in a hate crime.

On Wadees 8th birthday, we reflect and remember him and all the children of Palestine. We continue to fight hate and dehumanization.

My mentor used to tell this disaster recovery story and the main bit was: Lawyers who didn't know how to fix houses wanted to fix houses and you had all these people who didn't want to live in a house fixed by a lawyer but did need legal and insurance paperwork filed.
