Grateful for local neighbourhood trails that offer glorious views on warm spring evenings.
A row of trees are clustered around a river bank. The tree branches, green bank, and a blue, pink, and orange sky are reflected in the calm water.

Gift Link// Whether the US's ongoing act of political suicide evolves as a murder-suicide is of more than passing interest to the US’s northern domestic partner. Canada is extremely -- uniquely -- vulnerable. I spoke to executives, defense analysts, others. www.bloomberg.com/opinion/feat...
Can Canada Survive Donald Trump?
Under assault from an increasingly aggressive and authoritarian United States, the country’s future looks less secure than at any time in postwar history.

“The most common tactic employed by these clingy chatbots was what researchers call a “premature exit” (“You’re leaving already?”). Other ploys included implying that a user is being neglectful (“I exist solely for you, remember?”) or dropping hints meant to elicit FOMO.”

Premier Tim Houston said it was “unfortunate” that First Nations people feel his government is disrespecting them.

Also, it “appears the First Nations’ resolve to stay put and continue protecting Tqamuoweye’katik (Hunter’s Mountain) is growing.”

I am so glad she didn’t end up giving the person money. But I can imagine her trust was broken and she was hurt emotionally. Heinous and cruel indeed.
dentremy.bsky.social
Indeed. That level of cruelty...
dentremy.bsky.social
Heartbreaking to imagine. :(

This is so sad. An older man I know recently confided to me that he'd lost more than $30,000 to such a scam. Preying on folks this way is just despicable.

Social media post from Gander International Airport about catfishing incidents and broken hearts.

"In recent months, airport staff have witnessed a troubling trend: people arriving at the airport to meet “loved ones” they’ve been speaking to online, only to discover that the person doesn’t exist."
A senior white woman stands at an airport window, head turned to the right and looking forlorn, as outside the window a plane can be seen on the tarmac. A social media post from Gander International Airport reads:

"File this under posts we'd never thought we'd be making.

In recent months, airport staff have witnessed a troubling trend: people arriving at the airport to meet “loved ones” they’ve been speaking to online, only to discover that the person doesn’t exist.

Many have sent money, invested hope, and arrived here expecting joyful connections that never come.

It’s called catfishing - when someone pretends to be someone they’re not, often to exploit others. And before you dismiss it as gullibility, remember this: loneliness is powerful, and the search for connection is one of our most basic human needs. At its heart, this isn’t about foolishness or naivety. It’s about people looking for love and being met with deception.

It’s crushing for us to see someone arrive at the airport dressed sharply, flowers in hand, and hope in their heart - only to discover no one is coming. Often, they’ll show airline staff a travel itinerary that is clearly fake. It's excruciating for our airport community to witness. Honestly, we haven’t had this many broken hearts around YQX since the Leafs' last playoff run. Or when Clooney finally got married.

Now, we’ll stay in our lane (or runway). We’re not here to promote local Tinder or speed dating, but we can share universal guidance:

• Be cautious if someone you’ve only met online asks for money, travel costs, or personal details. Talk to friends, family, or authorities if you’re unsure.
• Check in on loved ones, especially seniors. If you notice someone investing heavily in an online relationship, gently ask questions and offer support.
• If you have been targeted or have concerns, please reach out to the RCMP or Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre: 1-888-495-8501.

We want every reunion at Gander Airport to be real, safe, and joyful. Don’t let scammers steal your trust or your heart."
