Another incident of federal agents pointing guns at Chicago area residents.
Tweet from @laura_n_rod

Text: A federal agent points a weapon at a woman who was recording them.

Jess, a U.S. citizen and member of a neighborhood patrol team that documents and shares ICE activity across the city, was filming when the incident occurred earlier today in the Berwyn area.

Interesting that despite the projectile bile she nonetheless seemed eager to avoid overt perjury. Apparently, not everyone is confident that the Maga Reich will last 1,000 years.

It's not just that they're going to strike down a law against conversion therapy, it's that they're going to do it on behalf of made-up claims from a straw plaintiff who can't honestly show the law affected her at all

One thing about American's widespread distrust and disapproval of the Supreme Court is that mainstream news coverage mostly doesn't dwell on stuff like standing, so people don't even begin to grasp how rigged the Court truly is www.nytimes.com/live/2025/10...

I have a very low opinion of Donald Trump. I did not, however, think the USG possessed photos of Trump with half-naked Epstein victims until Pam Bondi’s testimony today.

NOTABLE -- Pam Bondi refuses to answer direct questions about if the FBI has incriminating photos of Trump with half-naked young women, but instead deflects from them by attacking Sen. Whitehouse

"This is supposed to be an oversight hearing" -- Schiff helpfully ticks through all of the incriminating questions -- and there are many of them -- that Bondi refused to answer during today's hearing

“People talk a lot about ‘can you get a deal with Trump?’,” said Gerald Butts. “As someone who spent a lot of time trying to do that … the … question is, ‘Is a deal even possible with a person who does not believe in the dictionary definition of the word deal?’” www.bloomberg.com/opinion/feat...
Can Canada Survive Donald Trump?
Under assault from an increasingly aggressive and authoritarian United States, the country’s future looks less secure than at any time in postwar history.

“While less than 1 percent of the fentanyl intercepted at the US border comes from Canada,” Trudeau said, clearly signaling that his nation was performing a costly charade for an audience of one, “any amount of fentanyl is too much.”

Today, Josh Hawley -- who voted to overturn the 2020 election after fanning the Big Lie that the election was stolen from Trump, the same lie that fueled the Jan. 6 insurrection that Hawley was egging on -- is outraged the FBI reportedly analyzed some GOP senators' phone records in its Jan. 6 probe.

If Trump escalates pressure, Canada’s choice may well be to submit and suffer, or resist and suffer more. The US can inflict enormous and disproportionate pain in a trade war. Even if Canada can maintain its democracy under US pressure, it is highly likely to be collateral damage of US decline.

Consequences of US political degradation cannot be contained within the US. African children who were alive Jan. 19 are dead today. Summary executions are US policy.
Canada’s precarious state is not the direst consequence of US political degradation. But it’s an all-but-impossible one to rectify.

Border Patrol at a Home Depot in Los Angeles days after the 9th circuit affirmed a court order that purports to block this exact behavior. They don't even know who they're chasing! This is insane. Send them all to jail.

If the US grows more authoritarian, Europe will seek to further collective defense capacity while distancing itself from Washington (and fending off its own far-right threats). Canadians can shop for European hardware and share their woes with like-minded democracies. They can’t alter geography.
franciswilkinson.bsky.social
In Canada, as in Europe, increasing the defense budget is often described as an effort to placate Trump. That’s not wrong. But it’s also incomplete. Higher defense spending also represents a necessary, if inadequate, hedge against a US administration that is openly hostile to democracies.

On defense, Canada is even more locked into US priorities. “It’s very easy...to say that Canada needs to diversify its security partnerships,” said Thomas Juneau. “But in practice it’s extremely difficult. We are so deeply integrated with the US that diversification [will] take years and decades.”

The realities of capitalism and markets imply that if Trump accelerates his assault on the Canadian economy, forcing Canadian companies to choose between insolvency or moving production and jobs to the US, nationalist fervor may not last. Some executives are already considering it.

In Canada, sovereignty itself could be in play. “If the US becomes even more authoritarian, we will be pushed further,” said Ward Elcock, a former director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service and a former deputy minister of national defense. “They will want more subservience on trade.”
