the most difficult thing for tech nerds to internalize is that endless customization scares the shit out of most people and they would like whatever it is to Just Work

hell, I am a tech nerd and most of the time that’s all I want too
"why don't you do a clean install why don't you do linux what if you replaced this" no no no no no. This is the bestselling laptop on Amazon and I am acting as if I am a normal person. Normal people don't even know what linux is. They think the Penguin is bothersome

This is solid. I’ve also used php and bash/shell scripting a bit. The order likely depends on your sector/position. My personal order by use is probably

1) JS/html/css
2) php
3) python
4) SQL
5) Bash/shell

GIS is interwoven into 2 & 3.
I would say:
1) Python, by far
2) R a clear alternative
3) GIS (No 1 for some jobs)
4) HTML, CSS, Javascript (they go together anyway)
5) SQL (tho haven’t had a chance, myself)

Matlab and Fortran only when all colleagues are using it.
When it comes to what programming languages should meteorologists spend time learning, here are some ranked in order of importance in my opinion:

1) Python - 1st place by far, if I had time to only learn 1, I would choose Python.

2) R
3) Matlab
4) Javascript
5) HTML
6) SQL
7) Fortran 90

Good news - data started flowing again from NOAA NCEI yesterday. For instance, here are the latest monthly sea surface temperature anomaly observations across the #Arctic (September 2024) using NOAA OISSTv2.1.

I think this was the best shots I could get from central Kentucky after finding out so late that it was possible to see this far south.

So very cool though. Better through the phone long exposure.
