Losing my mind and what look like video game assets but instead were used to justify war crimes and genocide in the real world

NEW: Since October 2023, the IDF Spokesperson's Unit has released dozens of 3D animations illustrating alleged Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iranian sites

The style is unmistakable: satellite zoom-ins, black & white wireframes, and red-textured houses - a new visual language of war.Our analysis of 43 official IDF videos found recycled 3D environments, spatial inaccuracies, and assets lifted from unrelated artists and institutions.We traced over 30 unique assets to Washington-based 3D creator Ian Hubert, who makes bespoke models created for his sci-fi project Dynamo Dream, available to his Patreon subscribers.

Fascinating work here tracing how the IDF recycled 3D assets from a cyberpunk sci-fi art project, the Scottish Maritime Museum and elsewhere to populate its widely-seen models of supposed enemy locations in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran. One of the most infamous, the alleged underground Hamas command center at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, used to justify an unprecedented assault on the biggest medical center in Gaza, was actually an animation the IDF had used the previous year, saying at the time it was a tunnel beneath a UN school.

As if prescient, I'm *pretty* certain I just lost out on an opportunity specifically because of non-compete and the fact that I do a bunch of my own work in order to sustain myself on the side.

Weird thing I'm thinking about tonight: I feel like I have a lot of pretty noteworthy and cool and good accomplishments, but they're all in industries and fields that are so saturated and intensely volitile that very few of them really like...amount to anything one could make a living off of.

When it comes to visual direction I just have a loose idea I just sorta vaguely chase (and usually fail at various points) so it's really weird to look at a super early and more-or-less thoughtless concept and realized I kinda managed to keep it locked on

Went back to look at old concept art for a thing and was surprised how well the final characters honed in on the first sketch I made, in part @sullivillain.bsky.social's excellent model but also just from shader work. #SKRUBSquad

Maybe the problem is that Avenue Road is six lanes wide?

Burnside's point is that maybe the 40 km/h speed limit on Avenue Rd and other streets is too low. Getting a ticket for "going 50 or 51 on Avenue Road that's six lanes wide, seems to be the kind of thing that would get under people's craws," he says.

Gray points out there are schools on Avenue Road.

Update: thank god they're safe up on that roof in full body armor, taking potshots at unarmed protesters. I know I'll be sleeping better tonight. I would point out that what they're doing is like...very illegal. But I'm sure it's for completely ethical reasons.

More work on the halftone shader! Now I'm doing two fullscreen passes for both a dark and a mid halftone.

I also found the halftone too distracting when applied to large flat surfaces like walls during gameplay, so I implemented surface normal checks so they don't appear on them anymore #SKRUBSquad

This is actually something I've been meaning to add for a while, as there's no body in first person mode so understanding how the emotes are activated/deactivated is a bit difficult to really understand in single player

Still don't know much about either but it feels like people talked about these games like they were the Second Coming, and then a week later I saw lots of "ehh it's fine but-" as people got a level head after the social media blitz wore off.

Between Silent Hill f and Blue Prince this is a standout year for "games that everyone got impossibly hyped over after playing for an hour or two, which then mellowed out on after they played more than that"

Anyway there's no point to this (I shouldn't trust my post-9pm brain) but sometimes I think it'd be better to have done nothing impressive and instead like, make enough to save for retirement and not feel a wash of guilt whenever I pay my credit card bills. 🤷‍♀️

A few times in the last couple years folks have said to me "you've accomplished so much for your age!" and my eyes just glaze over because on one hand yes. but on the other hand its been like three years since I've had an income that is more than 20k (if that) so not sure how great it really feels.

I have a youtube video with over 300k views! I have shipped 5 indie games by myself! I funded a Kickstarter! I shipped a AAA game! I am teaching at a university!

They all sound good and important on paper, yet very few of them ever provide enough to like...be able to make a consistent income.
