Two queer women with a 6 year old in school today stopped to film ICE and for their bravery ICE agents murdered one before the other’s eyes. The grief in the survivor’s voice is a knife to the gut. Destroying people and their bonds is what ICE has always done.

Sara Lilycove is a transwoman from California who always played as the women characters in her videogames, even from a young age.
I preferred playing Mario 2 entirely because I could play as Peach.
Even before kindergarten I was playing as Peach, and that was a more easily identifiable experience for me than being shoved into the game's male characters. Sara's experiences were less about dipping her toe into gender performativity in a virtual world and more about just playing what felt right. 'GoldenEye 007, a few years later, I think my entire impetus for completing] the game was to unlock more ladies in multiplayer. When I had to play as Bond it was mediocre but acceptable, but when I got to play as [woman assassin] Xenia Onatopp then I was actually playing as me?
Fury, a poet from Melbourne, remembers their first early experiences with play and gender identity outside of the digital realm.
'One of my earliest games was playing house with the girls in kindy.
I was always cast as the dad because I was the tallest, and most of the time I was totally okay with that, but I found it frustrating that I wasn't allowed to be the mum sometimes, too. I think about that a lot. Especially considering that the arbitrary notions of masculine and feminine affected the game so much and from such a young age, this is pre-five years old.'

mostly empty worlds as the identity that felt right. Not that I had the words to explain it then, but it gave me peace. I'd often invite friends over and play as Sonya in Mortal Kombat just to beat them up as a girl, [and] I also played a lot of Resident Evil specifically because I could play as female, and it gave me a lot of power to overcome these evil things that would haunt you.'
Games helped Kara a lot back then, especially those with playable characters that were women. That said, given that criteria, 'There weren't that many games to choose from,' she notes.
Clearly, videogames can be meaningful and important to anyone, and different people value different types of games over others. It makes sense that, over the years, diverse groups have tried adopting and modifying the gamer label to better fit them.
