Fix Framework Laptop 16's keyboards appearing as gamepads on Linux

Games on Linux might see your Framework Laptop 16’s keyboards as gamepads. This is because the QMK-based firmware1 running on them includes the a HID descriptor that reports the System Controls usage2. Linux uses the contents of that usage to fill out things like the absolute coordinate range and button set. Now, udev classifies a device as a joystick if it has absolute coordinates and joystick buttons. This is understandable, because joysticks have those things.

What Happens When Windows Shuts Down?

When you choose Shut Down, Windows begins a sequence of orderly steps. It tells each program to close its files, to set down what it was working on. Most comply. Some resist. Windows asks again, more firmly. Eventually, all but one obey. There is always one.

Once the programs are silent, Windows turns to its own parts. It lowers the desktop, dims the icons, pulls the taskbar out of sight. The clock is the last to go. Time has to be persuaded.

You will then see the black screen, and the message: It is now safe to turn off your computer. This is true. You are free to press the button. Many users do.

If you wait, however, something else will happen. Slowly, the monitor will begin to glow again. Not with the desktop, not with any familiar prompt, but with a pale light, as though something is behind the glass. It will not speak, but you will understand that it has been waiting there, patiently, for every shutdown you have ever performed.

You may turn off the machine at this point. You should. If you do not, the light will brighten until it hurts to look at. Some users report that it does not stop. Some report that the monitor grows warm, then hot, then soft.

If this occurs, pull the plug immediately. Windows will forgive you. The thing behind the glass will not.

Gmail now offers a proud, brightly-colored "Unsubscribe" button that just takes you to the sender's website. Fuck that. If that's all you offer on your e-mails, you get the same treatment as all other spam.

A dialog box, titled "Report spam or unsubscribe?"
It buries the lede: "Go to the sender's website to unsubscribe."
I clicked "Report spam" anyway.

"Sideloading" is the rentseeker word for "being able to run software of your choosing on a computing device you purchased". There is no reasonable case for an operating system developer having a say over what programs you run on your hardware.

Mildly cursed factoid about UNC paths: - UNC Paths can contain IP addresses such as \\\192.168.1.1\share - IPv6 addresses are supported as well - IPv6 addresses contain colons - can't have colons in Windows paths since colons are reserved for drive letters So Microsoft came up with the the ipv6-literal.net domain that's special-cased by Windows so you can to write IPv6 addresses in UNC paths as 2a0e-3c0--21.ipv6-literal.net without it hitting any resolvers.

Cursed interfaces are a gift (as long as you're not the one trying to use it)

A website interface to put in your birthday. However the month selector is split up into three sections with the first few letters of each month's name in the first section and so on so that in order to pick a month you have to line up all three tumblers correctly.

it's especially funny/sobworthy that looking up the current time in various locations has worked perfectly well on google for years, because someone took the time to design, code and test a useful feature. but that's not Number Go Up enough so now we have the all-knowing video card that says 7:14 pm
