When I was pregnant, I tried to eat well, stay healthy & protect myself from undue stress because the baby could be affected.

For this reason, ICE had a long time policy not to detain pregnant people.

But now they are detaining them, brutalizing them & denying medical attention.

A plumber working on my pipes is distraught, and I find out that two of his employees were kidnapped that morning. A week later it happens again. An email arrives. Agents with guns have chased a teacher into the school where she works. They did not have a warrant. They dragged her away, ignoring her and her colleagues’ pleas to show proof of her documentation. That evening I stand a few feet from the parents of Rayito de Sol and listen to them describe, with anguish, how good Ms. Diana was to their children. What it is like to have strangers with guns traumatize your kids. For a teacher to hide a three-year-old child for fear they might be killed. How their relatives will no longer leave the house. The CEOs earned between 18-40 million last year, 1000x their median employee income.

They took billions in profits, while their workers relied on SNAP to survive.

Wanna fix fraud and abuse?

It seems obvious if not indisputable that people in the throes of a major depressive episode or anxiety attack are less likely to vote. When the dread gremlin pokes your frontal lobe with a carving fork, isn’t filling in bubbles at a fluorescent-lit school gym (triggering!) just about the last thing you’d like to do? Even if you already have a ballot at home, do you honestly want to sit down at a table and slog through the endless list of candidates and (especially for the beleaguered Californians among us) byzantine ballot measures? No! You do not want to Google yet another inscrutable proposition about dialysis regulations. You’d rather watch The Summer I Turned Pretty and cry! As the sun sets in the middle of the afternoon and the needling fuzz of depression wraps around your brain, the very notion of expending time and energy to participate in our doomed democracy seems like a sick joke.
