now that the news is official: some thoughts on Bari Weiss taking over at CBS News, and what it means that the Free Press—a publication that never apologizes or corrects itself when its "reporting" is ripped to shreds—is touted as a needed dose of "trust and integrity" slate.com/technology/2...

Shelters that house unaccompanied minors are bracing for "Freaky Friday," the start of an ICE operation that will first issue letters to children, seeking to pressure them to return to the countries they've fled in exchange for a cash payment. If they decline, their parents will be targeted by ICE.

Prison telecom companies and more than a dozen red-state attorneys have challenged imposing limits on the cost of phone calls from prison, arguing that they would deprive lockups of necessary funding.

My god.

“Watson said she saw agents dragging residents, including kids, out of the building without any clothes on and into U-Haul vans. Kids were separated from their mothers…’It was heartbreaking to watch…seeing kids coming out buck naked and taken from their mothers, it was horrible.’”

For the new ep of KyCIR's Digging In series, I brought @divyakrthk.bsky.social back on the @lpm.org airwaves to talk about an immigration case w/ KY & IN ties. U.S. authorities say an Indiana man was convicted once for forgery & should be deported. But Divya's reporting found a lack of evidence.
Digging In: Trump admin tries to deport longtime Indiana businessman suffering from a brain tumor
Federal authorities want to deport an Indiana resident who has a green card, which grants permanent residency in the U.S. They kept him in custody after a judge said he could be released on bond.

Paramjit Singh is going blind while in ICE detention in Kenton County Jail, KY. He’s been a green card holder since 1994.

DHS wants to deport him for a forgery conviction — but they’ve produced no record that one exists.

The People’s Patrol is one of many volunteer rapid-response networks countering a Trump administration deportation blitz in the Chicago area. The idea is to locate immigration enforcement activity, record it, document abuses and, right on the spot, voice community opposition.

Update: after today’s prelim removal proceedings, a contested hearing is scheduled for mid Oct. DHS‘ lawyers will have to submit substantiating evidence and cause — the alleged forgery/larceny conviction — to justify Singh’s deportation.

Singh will remain in ICE custody.

”the number of detainees without any criminal charge or conviction grew by 1,016.“

Automatic stays allow DHS to effectively ignore immigration court orders.

“It was intended to be used in really extreme cases, and instead, ICE is using it just everywhere," our senior litigation attorney Suchita Mathur told @divyakrthk.bsky.social.

In Singh’s case, the Trump administration is using a dated mechanism — an automatic stay— to their advantage to override his immigration judge’s decisions, keep him locked up, and push for deportation. And it’s getting a lot more common, experts say.
