I'm not really plugged into this stuff so maybe there's some obvious reason my hunch can't be right. But it's what has occurred to me.

(I guess the Court has scheduled this particular issue for its next term. That may reflect a political judgment that by then it'll clearly be politically safe to rule against Trump -- or in favor of Trump! Maybe in 2025 Roberts is trying to let the dust settle before he picks a side.)

For example, if he has to rule against the birthright citizenship policy or anything big like that, better do it when political forces are consolidated in opposition to Trump. For now let Trump do his thing and kick the can while retaining the ability to rule later.

Of course, Roberts is a right-wing activist. But it seems at least plausible that he's still concerned with his own personal and institutional power. So he may judge that (1) the Court will have to politically confront Trump at some point, and (2) now is not the time.
