I'll be on ABC Nightlife's 'This Week in History' at 11.00pm (AEDT) on Sunday - 30 minutes on the life of Edgar Ætheling and the political landscape of 1066.

You could make a drinking game out it: a beverage whenever I muddle my Edwards, Edgars, Harolds, and Williams. But it might get dangerous!

Would be interested as well. I re-read it a year or two ago (did a course on Empress Matilda), and my impression was that she didn’t come off well – though, admittedly, politics serves only as a backdrop in the book.

Chapeau to @pseudo-isidore.bsky.social for his wonderful new book which has just arrived, an amazingly global and ecumenical volume, in all senses! Beautifully produced by OUP (and before publication day!?).

A spur to others!

A warmly evocative tribute to Jinty Nelson by Alice Rio:
'Her openness about her family & how much it meant to her turned her into an inspiring role model to generations of younger women...she somehow made you feel that you could be yourself, & that this would not be counted against you.'

Written 55 years ago, Schulz's heartfelt clarity cuts through the noise, even today.

Scan of a typed letter from 1970, from Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, addressed to "Joel Lipton, 622 N. Foothill Road, Beverly Hills, Calif. 90210"

It reads:

"Dear Joel:

I think it is more difficult these days to define what makes a good citizen than it has ever been before. Certainly all any of us can do is follow our own conscience and retain faith in our democracy. Sometimes it is the very people who cry out the loudest in favor of getting back to what they call "American Virtues" who lack this faith in our country.

I believe that our greatest strength lies always in the protection of our smallest minorities.

Sincerely yours,

Charles M. Schulz"

The Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies is hiring three postdoctoral researchers.

We investigate the causes and mechanisms that contribute to the persistence of strong asymmetrical dependencies across historical and contemporary contexts.

Pre-modern perspectives are very welcome!

Where did we get the letters of the alphabet from?

And why does English use them so strangely?

Here’s an excerpt from the new book, “Why Q needs U: A history of our letters and how we use them”, which takes you on a linguistic odyssey through the history of the alphabet:

So my understanding is that most medieval scholars no longer believe in the historicity of the berserker myth, but I'm having trouble finding focused scholarship on the issue in English. Does anyone here have a good reference article to hand on the question?

Literary critic: The "gap", or occlusion, if you will, the liminal and fleeting spectre that returns to haunt us in the shape of the Real, that absent presence that animates our flickering awareness of the unreachable and unknowable Other
