Like. I've maintained for awhile that we _could_ have ethically built generative AI models that would be more, not less, useful and be more energy efficient than our current set.

They would be tremendously valuable. But they wouldn't do the fun emergent behaviors that people are so enamored by […]

In the hope that this might reach someone who might some day be in a position to decide whether to allow #vpn traffic to their app…
Please understand that this does not just impact your app.
Most devices run background apps that use the network frequently, including privacy-critical apps like […]

This is the key thing to notice about whataboutism: it is not actually a moral argument at all. It's not saying, "the thing you accuse us of is actually good," or "we didn't do it."

It just says, "everyone does this bad thing, so you're not allowed to hold us responsible." It's permission.

Every few months now I re-read this "Who Goes Nazi?" piece from 1941 and am blown away by how it captures the people we are dealing with 80 years later.

"Through gossamer tributes, Kirk’s cruel condemnation of transgender people & his racist throwback views about Black Americans were no longer anathema but instead are being treated as just another political view to be respectfully debated — like a position on tax rates or health care policy."

Yup.

## it is all lies

Before things get a lot worse, which it looks like they’re about to do given Trump’s “full force” order and his “anti-fascism is terrorism” executive memo, I need to reiterate:

It’s lies. This shit about Portland? It’s all lies.

The lies […]

It is now literally illegal for trans people to use the bathroom there.

Your trans friends and colleagues are going to be silently judging you for hosting events in a place it's illegal for them to exist when there's lots of […]

Sunday night's aurora and the Big Dipper over our lake. I am perpetually amazed that if the conditions are right it's possible to catch the aurora in our little light-polluted suburb.

The number one survival skill today is to remember now who the sympathizers to the fascism are.

The ones who you can never trust again, so long as you both shall live.

Whatever they were before: family member, friend, co-worker, lover, matters not in the slightest. Count on zero loyalty or […]

@[email protected] I think an awful lot of us are asking ourselves that question.

Personally my viewpoint on the question is strongly colored by the fact that a third of the American electorate **actively voted for** this, and another third didn't give enough of a shit to vote against it […]
