Good thread. "autism and seizures are different; autism and developmental delays are different; autism and attention challenges are different."

Maybe I'm just starved for sane & grounded autism discourse but "Autism is not one condition" seems like a genuinely useful conclusion. Maybe things are looking up.

Autism Is Not a Single Condition and Has No Single Cause, Scientists Conclude
Research reveals that those diagnosed with autism early show distinct genetic and developmental profiles from those diagnosed later.

This is worth reading.

"Autistic people do not form a fixed spectrum with clear segments of 'high functioning' and 'low functioning' and 'profound.' Hope this helps." @ejwillingham.bsky.social on the autism grievance parent campaign for a #ProfoundAutism label, in today's TPGA Newsletter:

Do some tall people have "profound tallness?" (This is an autism labels side-eye)
You can’t take the tallness out of someone, not in any ethical way. “Tall” is just what they are.

Always thought that the name Rebecca meant "a knot". This seemed fair enough: persistent, stubborn, perhaps. But I looked up name meanings for our daughter and her friend earlier and for Rebecca it said "to tie/bind", representing "strong bonds, connection, and enduring strength". Today's tiny joy 😊

That made me laugh (the cabbage etc, not your friend's timetable)

Oh that is an excellent and really helpful point 🧡

This is brilliant

It's seven years since we posted on Twitter about how kids kept coming into the library asking if we had any books about FORTNITE. We didn't back then, and we'd never heard of it so we tried asking what it was.

I love this thread 😊

1/ Geodude is a tough-looking little rock-type guy with balled-up fists 🤛😠🤜. Despite the crusty form and threatening pose, it looks more cute than dangerous. At least to me.

Time for a #Pokenomastics thread! We'll look at Geodude's names in a whole bunch of languages.

Things I needed to learn as an autistic kid:
- how to rest & recover from overstimulation
- how to connect with other kids in ways that were meaningful to me
- how to self advocate, and how to know when advocacy could help & what to do when it couldn't
- how to notice my mind being anxious

Brilliant 😂 I want these answers...

This is super interesting - well done! Will pass straight on to my PhD student who will also be interested...

This sounds amazing! The kind of thing I looked for (and didn't find) when I got diagnosed.

This is a really good point. Up until the age of 8 or 9 I could take my daughter to the park annd she would always find someone to play with. Age 10 there's rarely anyone. The boys aren't there either, as far as I can see.

Girls' use of public space is a really important cause -- and has been such a big issue since my own childhood (remember the subplot in Bill's New Frock about who gets to use which bits of the school playground?) -- but some work can have the effect of over-emphasising a gender binary, I worry.

Always a favourite, as people go and look for elephants! Go outside, and name the biggest and smallest creature you can find - in any language :)

#ADHD IS NOT becoming more common

"Lead researcher Dr Alex Martin said it was likely to be a case of under-diagnosis of the condition in the first place."

That is what we ourselves keep saying. There are a lot of adults around the world struggling, not being recognised as ADHDers.

Greater awareness behind ADHD surge, study suggests
Study found ADHD is not becoming more common, despite a surge in people being diagnosed.

The different Japanese names for sweet potato in this thread are interesting.
claviercontinuo.bsky.social
In Japanese, the roots or underground organs of a plant that store nutrients and hypertrophy are called "イモ(imo)".
By the way, potato was introduced to Japan in 17th century from Jacatra, which is old name of Jakarta of Indonesia.

My son just sent me a video of a film editor who makes the past tense of "to sync" ... "sunc". As in "a clip here that isn't sunc to any audio". Fascinating!
