Martin County's only hospital was forced to close in 2023, mere months before North Carolina finally expanded Medicaid. Its closure punched a huge hole in rural healthcare down East - the closest hospital is now in Greenville (40 mins away).

Story-telling and narrative are key

“…this suggests that when trust in government is so low, the only way to move people’s views on a given policy is to explicitly tell them about their impact on specific families.”

Journalists often ask for my thoughts on the contemporary US pronatalist movement. My assessment is based on my expertise and training as a social demographer, and my own research on childbearing behaviors at the individual and aggregate levels.

Strap in, b/c I've got a lot to say. 1/

NEW: More women have nearly bled to death during miscarriage under Texas’ abortion ban.

Experts say the trend paints a troubling picture of the harms of unnecessary delays in care. “This is striking,” one doctor said. “The trend is very clear.”
A “Striking” Trend: After Texas Banned Abortion, More Women Nearly Bled to Death During Miscarriage

At this time it's super important to make sure people have accurate information around abortion. So I've been sharing a thread with a number of resources that I'll continue to re-share to ensure the information is getting out to all who need it.

Thinking of this @propublica.org reporting today about stillbirths of unvaccinated parents during the Delta wave, before CDC had explicitly recommended COVID vaccines for pregnant people and the damage the virus did to the placentas.

Stirring and beautiful piece on the people repro groups leave behind by supporting viability limits on abortion.

So-called “compromises” lead to forced births, like that of a California woman turned away after raising thousands and flying across the country. Read @amylittlefield.bsky.social:
What Would It Mean to Defend All Abortions?
Democrats love to avoid it, and Republicans love to lie about it. But later-abortion care has never been more important.
