It’s decades since I read it, but still think of The Music of Chance as one of the best things I’ve read.

There’s no right or wrong in these impossible and immensely painful decisions to leave or not to leave - family, community, language, culture, country.

Dreadful that people are being put in this position.

Me, I’ve always felt I’d want my kids to just go. Be safe and live their lives.

It really is - my grandmother didn’t want to leave because they’d not have been able to take her elderly mother with them. By the time they were deported to a death camp in ‘42, g-grandmother had had two strokes, was almost blind, and was confined to her bed.

These are impossible situations.

Whatever the ethics, I’ve always said to mine - those who leave first are the ones who get out safely. Don’t wait.

My dad got out of Nazi Germany in June 1939; the rest of his family didn’t manage to leave ahead of the Holocaust

Some people now are critical of those leaving the US; me, not so much

Of all the places with a hellish history… To make people from Haiti, of all places, frightened and unsafe is a special kind of inhumane.

You know - the world is so weird at the moment …

I have no idea if this is a joke or not 🥺

A sibling and I share a birthday, exactly 4 years apart.

We used to tease my dad that it was his sense of Germanic precision.

Not sure how much he appreciated having smart-arse British kids, tbh 😂
