For those who don't know me: I work independently at an intersection of Holocaust history, migration history, & German Jewish genealogy, utilising micro archives, macro archives, collaborative project work, digital methods, & digital outputs.

Estonia has closed the Saatse border crossing with Russia due to an unusually large Russian military presence on the other side. The Estonian Police and Border Guard (PPA) noted increased patrols and military movements that were much higher than normal, which were deemed beyond routine activities.

Truly, a soulless place.

Had some stopovers there, back in the day, and nothing about it made me want to return even for a short holiday never mind to live there.

Also - climate change and the kind of developments being created there 😱😱😱

Same. First winter I’ve not had the booster call up.

Have given up waiting and booked in for a private one on Tuesday. Hoping I don’t catch it before then 😬

Fedor was on a notorious transport from Düsseldorf to Riga in winter 41

Leopold collapsed on the street in Hindenburg in 1941 after starvation & mistreatment in prison.

Kurt was last heard from in a labour camp in Krenau ghetto, starving to death in winter 42-43. The ghetto was ‘cleared’ in Feb 43

My grandfather Leopold fought in FWW, wounded twice. Great-uncles Fedor & Kurt also fought. Fedor was a PoW in France ->1920

My father wrote that Leopold thought his FWW service would give him some measure of protection as a German Jew, from the Nazis

Sadly, he was wrong. All 3 were killed by 1943

There was absolutely no evidence whatsoever that Jews in Germany deliberately sabotaged the WW1 war effort or organised a grand conspiracy to destroy Germany after the war. Zero.

Obvious point but worth bearing in mind during this ‘Great Antifa scare of ‘25’

I can’t work out how much of (gestures) ‘all this’ is genuine stupidity, and how much calculated to ricochet off the base like a pinball machine.

Still trying to divert from the unedifying sight of her and the Pres not knowing the meaning of habeas corpus, presumably.

Wonderful news!

Must be a relief to have it done.

Many congratulations.

Had a great call from a chap from the Berlin Jewish museum about my dad’s German Jewish materials.

He’s arranging to visit us in a few weeks - part of a trip of similar visits, following on from the same in Canada. (I want his job!)

It’s made me 🤔 again about a first visit to Berlin…

More soon.

This month we share the news that our Director will be leaving the Library at the end of the year to start an exciting role at IWM North. We’ll be sad to see Toby go after over a decade of important and instrumental work, but we wish him all the best with this brilliant opportunity buff.ly/4rOXc5K

Oh fantastic!

Fruit cheeses are lovely with all kinds of things - hope you enjoy sharing it round and getting lots of credit 😁

These are relaxing things to make, if you have time. Something good about laying foods down in these older ways for autumn and winter.

Amazing advance.

Might not happen in my lifetime, but I have 🤞🏻 for future generations to have better health outcomes from these discoveries

The class of immune cells at the centre of Monday’s Nobel prize is showing promise as a treatment for autoimmune diseases, cancer and even organ transplants — but there are still key challenges to overcome before these cells can be used in therapies in the clinic.

@boston.gov onboarded all their agencies to Bluesky to engage with Bostonians. Whether it's broken sidewalks, missing signage, or community issues, they want to hear from constituents. With little to no engagement on X, their actual interactions on bsky have increased. Engagement > follower count
