NEW: I spoke to clergy and faith leaders who've joined protests at the Chicago-area ICE facility.

Three say they've been shot with pepper balls, sometimes while praying.

All say ICE is also violating their religious freedom, and one is arguing it in court. religionnews.com/2025/10/07/i...

This is a REALLY good video that gets into the *specifics* of how AI is degrading our information environment and putting truth further out of reach for the average person / the population as a whole

I walked into the lounge last night to find my teenage son watching this. We have long admired @kurzgesagt.org and found their videos to be extremely illuminating. But this one in particular I think is so important right now!

Tucson is (barely) in the cone for Hurricane Priscilla! ... this storm won't be anything like a hurricane when whatever's left of it reaches the southwest U.S., but its moisture is expected to support thunderstorms during a month (October) that otherwise tends to be pretty dry over here.
The National Hurricane Center's forecast cone for Hurricane Priscilla issued at 8am MST on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. Within the cone, the 3-day time frame is shaded in very light gray and the 4-5 day time frame is transparent with white dots.

A life update: this wound up paying off. I'm still applying to several jobs that are hopefully careers, but I've got my survival needs covered by a job at the airport that I'm apparently pretty good at.

And instead of being in an office alone, which was driving me mad, I see 20k people a day.

There is a line around this building to get to the line entrance to wait to get into this job fair.

At the airport. For airport jobs.

Nice result, and it reinforces everything Montgomery County said to SCOTUS before its theocrats made their dehumanizing ruling. open.substack.com/pub/erininth...

Please, just stop sending me AI videos of Dad. Stop believing I wanna see it or that I'll understand, I don't and I won't. If you're just trying to troll me, I've seen way worse, i'll restrict and move on. But please, if you've got any decency, just stop doing this to him and to me, to everyone even, full stop. It's dumb, it's a waste of time and energy, and believe me, it's NOT what he'd want.
To watch the legacies of real people be condensed down to 'this vaguely looks and sounds like them so that's enough,
, just so
other people can churn out horrible TikTok slop puppeteering them is maddening. You're not making art, you're making disgusting, over-processed hotdogs out of the lives of human beings, out of the history of art and music, and then shoving them down someone else's throat hoping they'll give you a little thumbs up and like it.
Gross. And for the love of EVERYTHING, stop calling it 'the future. Al is just badly recycling and regurgitating the past to be reconsumed. You are taking in the Human Centipede of content, and from the very very end of the line, all while the folks at the front laugh and laugh, consume and consume.

Letting the health care tax credits expire would devastate American families — and we’re making that crystal clear by giving you the data.

We’ve built graphics showing how much costs would rise in every GOP district.

Let’s start with Mike Johnson (R-LA):

"To forgo the shiny new AI tools and embrace the Herculean process of learning is not easy, and it takes a ridiculous amount of time. But it’s up to us to decide whether or not we value the process." Yeah, this clever, humorous, and insightful essay from a student columnist is worth your time.

Though warmth in the Caribbean Sea is not at 2023 or 2024 levels as of yesterday (5 October 2025), it's noticeably beyond what's been observed via area-wide sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in other years since 1982.
Line plots of area-averaged sea surface temperature in the Caribbean Sea as of October 5, 2025. Black shows the 1991-2020 average, red shows 2023, orange shows 2024, and blue shows 2025 (so far). An inset map depicts October 5th's map of anomalies, where the dashed box represents the averaging region used to make the line plot values. These are computed from NOAA's OISST dataset using Python.

12 years is a long time. A good stretch. But the EF-5 “drought” has ended.

Also, this is a lesson to the Monday morning quarterbacks that this took *3 months* to confirm. Good analysis takes time. So save your hot takes immediately after an event.

Physics students are told their degree is a ticket to anything but during their time at university, it's rarely elaborated on. So Toni Feder has gone out and interviewed physicists with varied careers away from the field (Posts the physicist whose job title is digital experience director...)
What can physicists do?
Interviews offer a glimpse of how physicists get into—and thrive in—myriad nonacademic careers.

as a girl with a PhD in natural language processing and machine learning it's actually offensive to me when you say "we don't know how LLMs work so they might be conscious"

I didn't spend 10 years in mines of academia to be told ignorance is morally equal knowledge.

We know exactly how LLMs work.

Sometimes I think about how from 1935-1975ish, Bell Labs produced an insane amount of revolutionary science and technology, including 11 Nobel Prizes, the transistor, UNIX, C, the laser, the solar cell, information theory, etc. The secret? Provide scientists with ample, steady, no-strings funding.

I’ll see that “pack it out” challenge and raise you a “take an extra trash bag and pick up some extra trash if you have the chance”. The parks and wildlife will be better for it.

PSA for folks visiting any National Public lands (parks, forests etc) during the shutdown: PLEASE take everything you brought in with you, including trash! Don't leave it in the bins if you can avoid it - those are emptied by National Parks/Forest workers. If they're furloughed that job isn't done.
