Job hunting psychologist of monkeys, wolves, dogs and anything interesting and fundable. Incapable of reading anyone's mind including my own. I research animal personality, happiness, and cognition when paid to do so. Views my own unless they're wrong

Seeing as I'm job hunting, it seems a good time for a reintroduction:

I'm Dr. Lauren Robinson, I'm a psychologist and animal welfare scientist that studies animal cognition, personality, and health and welfare. I've worked w 12+ species including apes, monkeys, dogs, wolves, and mix of zoo animals
The yearly sacrifice has been prepared 🎄🐈‍⬛

As I have a habit of moving, I don’t bother buying a proper Christmas tree and ornaments so my mom buys a cheap tree set specifically for the cat to enjoy/destroy. Yes, it’s not ideal for the environment but it makes great cat enrichment so call it even

As a primatologist I've never understood the urge to have a monkey as a pet. Why would you want a pet with thumbs?! That's just asking for trouble

🧪What an impressive track record!

The introduction of vaccines to children caused a ~99% decrease in cases of whooping cough, measles, mumps, diphtheria, rubella & polio.

This picture has been making the rounds again, and is being misidentified again.

This is a GOOSEFISH.

This is NOT a tasselled wobbegong shark.

It’s a great pic. I get why people are very excited about it. But it’s as easy to give it the right name as the wrong one.

This is all-hands on deck. RFK Jr. wants to destroy vaccination in the US. COVID and HBV vaccination were the first step. These diseases WILL come back. And your personal vaccination status is important, but so is the coverage in your community. So up your game and fight. www.vox.com/2015/3/25/82...

“Why aren’t young people having kids?!”
Well for one, anti-vaxxers, including the current health secretary, keep making choices that kill them.

Vaccines save lives 💉🧪
Breaking news: A vaccine advisory panel has voted to end the long-standing recommendation that newborns receive the hepatitis B vaccine — the most significant change to the childhood immunization schedule under Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
CDC panel makes most sweeping revision to child vaccine schedule under RFK Jr.
The panel voted to eliminate a long-standing recommendation for every newborn to receive a hepatitis B shot, excluding those born to mothers testing negative.

Immigrants commit fewer crimes.

Immigrants pay taxes.

Immigrants contribute over $2 trillion to the U.S. economy.

The problem isn't immigrants.

No-strings-attached, zero-means-testing, no-questions-asked cash payouts have been proven, over and over again, to be the most effective form of charity/aid going.

It gets people in housing, and it saves the state money. We know this. It's fact, not theory.
An Oregon pilot program giving cash to homeless youths sees a staggering reduction in homelessness. The program gave participants $1,000 cash payments each month for two years, and at the end of the project's first phase, 91% of participants reported being in stable housing.

It's one of the most dreaded times of the year in academia: Student evals!

This is where I remind students that I'm a person and what they write can hurt my feelings and encourage them to ask if they wouldn't say it to me or put their name to it, should they write it here?

this is the thing.
I DONT CARE if *some* students have managed to get accommodations by allegedly "gaming the system" or "doctor shopping"
I DON'T CARE.
Because my experience tells me how hard it is to be disabled in higher ed, as both a disabled student, and disabled faculty member now.
How about we worry less, as a society, about whether individuals might be cheating to get a disability accommodation or some help buying food, and more about whether extremely wealthy people and corporations are paying their fair share of taxes?

Being a visiting professor is a bit like being an off-brand Mary Poppins. You join the department, help some ignored kids, bring a bit of variety to the department, maybe even discussion of penguins cause fuck it why not, and leave before you have to see the longterm consequences of your actions

One of my fundamental beliefs is that I should not have to talk to people who have been cruel to me. You might be surprised to learn how often -- and vociferously -- people disagree with me about that.

I was diagnosed with #HIV in 1998, when I was 30.
Many of my friends had died of AIDS. I did not expect to live to 50.
I’m 58 now.
HIV treatment works.
Treatment also makes it impossible for me to pass HIV on during sex.
Ensure HIV treatment for all.
End HIV stigma.
