Sorry but Currywurst with Sauerkraut is an offence against all that is good.
A menu board in a pub listing "Oktoberfest Specials", one of which is Currywurst with Sauerkraut and curried ketchup.

Nice to open a book that I bought out of personal interest and find this. This is why my colleagues and I do what we do. It makes me so happy to read this. (From 'Central Europe: the Death of Civilization and the Life of an Idea' by @ljukic.bsky.social) @ghilondon.bsky.social
A picture of the acknowledgements page of the book mentioned in the tweet, with a highlighted passage: 'The staff of the SSEES Library and the German Historical Institute in London deserve great credit for running the two institutions that did most to facilitate the extensive research that this book required and whose rich shelves were a source of endless curiosity and inspiration.'

It is obscene and shameful to see Newnham Cambridge excluding trans women from fellowships. Nearly all the trans women I know in academia are precarious, and trans women are criminally underrepresented in every field relevant to the talent they have. This is pure nastiness (and that's the point)

Dear colleagues and friends,

A quarter of a century after its last major refurbishment, the GHIL is embarking on a new project to renovate and modernise its building. In a few weeks the builders will move in to make the public facing rooms of the Institute ready for the coming decades. 🧱🔨

Currently on pre-order at my local independent bookshop:

Katabasis by R.F. Kuang
The Power and the Glory: A New History of the World Cup by Jonathan Wilson
The First King of England: Æthelstan and the Birth of a Kingdom by David Woodman

This reflects my interests pretty well.

We were confounded by this, too, but my usual reaction to this kind of thing is to shrug and go “Americans,eh?”.

Rather amusing find (inscription on house in Scalloway, Shetland). More information here: newcleckitdominie.wordpress.com/2014/07/25/w...
An engraved inscription that reads:

This diagram illustrates the cause of the so called Earth Tides. Also each alternate Ocean Flood, the cause of which has never yet been understood.

RE EARTH TIDES: we are told that the Moon raises the solid surface of the Earth under it about 8 inches and raises the OPPOSITE SIDE 8. This I hold to be impossible. The phenomenon called EARTH TIDE IS CAUSED BY E-H’s WEIGHT PULLING …

[The remainder of this stone has worn but the Geograph contributor was informed that it ended: AGAINST THE SUN’S ATTRACTION.]

The water flows back when att’n over & forms a heap on opposite side of E. to balance att’n flood. There is no …

Feministly arguing that people assigned male at birth are innately better at strategy games than those assigned female at birth. Sensational women’s rights movement you’ve got there.

IT’S FUCKING CHESS

What POSSIBLE advantage, even in the warped mind of a transphobe, could being transgender give you at chess? They’re so nakedly hateful they just can’t stand any trans person winning anything ever. Pathetic.

@ihr.bsky.social has released a lovely set of videos on Youtube of interviews with eminent historians; made in the 80s and 90s, these are a lovely snapshot of titans in the field from a generation ago. www.youtube.com/@instituteof...

I think one of my main takeaways from #Bibliocon25 is that it's a fools errand trying to build sustainable research infrastructures, particularly on the national level, on the basis of projects with short-term funding and no clear idea of what happens after the end of the funding period.
