My new article ‘Mission Impossible?

i have said this before but when “getting rid of race in admissions” for the administration means “you can’t even try to reach out to underrepresented communities and encourage them to apply and if you do it is illegal discrimination against white people” then the actual goal here is segregation

By ending the minority recruitment program in May, Harvard shuttered a more than 50-year-old initiative to encourage minority high school students to apply.

This seems to be an instructive case: when legacy media appropriate the aesthetics of #MemeFascism (even if with critical intent), they make themselves into a vehicle for MAGA propaganda. The memefied brains behind the DHS account correctly recognized this as a perfect recruitment poster

What have been the best/most effective/meaningful environmental changes in 20thC Britain, in your view? I'm writing a new unit & have lots of disasters, decline, and conflicts; but I don't think it's been all bad. Some egs. of positive changes - intro of National Parks; rise of green politics...

not academic at all but some personal positives: rewilding/tree planting becoming more mainstream, solar panel grants (rip), payment charge for plastic bags, reintroduction of wild animals (red kites, beavers, bison!!), allotments being a groovy thing :)

Democrats and centrist media keep laundering this panic into ‘reasonable concerns’ but the anti-trans movement is overwhelmingly comprised of bigoted loser freaks. We’re missing a huge opportunity to make this a winning issue by pointing that out.

UK gov: we want to build vast new data centres because something something AI and never mind the environmental cost.

Also UK gov: oh no! Water shortages! Quick, everyone delete a few emails!

Who put these chuds in charge? 🙄

By my count this makes 5 out of 12 authors on the Polari First Book longlist who have withdrawn. It's hard to understate the moral courage this involves, esp for folk launching their first book into the world. As so often, those with the most to lose end up showing the most moral fibre. Here is my statement about the Polari award with alt text. Sorry for missing this the first time. X
This really sucks. I was overjoyed to be put on the Polari long list alongside other incredible LGBTQ+ authors. Absolutely over the moon in fact!

But an author, who has called themselves Trans Exclusionary, and has equated cis women who support trans folk with sexual abusers, has been included. I simply cannot continue with this in good faith.

The quality of his work is irrelevant. This is supposedly an award for ALL LGBTQ+ folk. Celebrating inclusion. Not exclusion and division.

My book is about ALL queer folk, it was supported by trans people and read by trans people. After the recent statement from Polari I find myself unsatisfied. I have to go with my integrity here just to be able to look myself in the mirror.
