Happy to share our new paper led by Corinna Breusing about how the Hunga volcanic eruption's decimation of nearby hydrothermal vent snails and mussels led to a significant reduction in the genomic diversity of their bacterial symbionts.

Antagonistic interactions between fish (Ophidiiformes) and one of the isocrinid individuals (Endoxocrinus parrae). Initially the fish is on the aboral side of the crinoid's strongly, flexed arms (A). The fish moving to the crinoid's adoral side and making quick strikes directed at the tips of the arms (B, C). Arm-flailing by the crinoid pushes the fish away from the crown (D).

Results from the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study show a striking 27-year increase in deep-sea fish larvae in the subtropical North Atlantic Ocean, likely due to food web changes, and seasonal and developmental changes in fish assemblage composition.

In textbooks, you'll find that certain iron-oxidizing bacteria are exclusively found in freshwater. But we've recovered their genomes from deep-sea hydrothermal vents! 🦠🤔
We've explored what they do, how they adapt to this environment, and whether we can determine their origins 🧬
