In Ecuador (my brother in law tells me) they celebrate NYE with effigies of the year's villains and problems and light em up. I could get behind that.

My experience in the South was that Southerners are very casual about their hatred of "Yankees". My time there wasn't fun.

It's astonishing that, in 2025, the point has yet to get through to norms-obsessed prosecutors. A lot of books on this stuff were best-sellers; you can buy them at the airport!

What makes a banana republic a banana republic is not any prosecution of the outgoing administration, but baseless, politically motivated prosecution. There is a whole literature which teaches that, if crimes against the public order occurred, failing to prosecute them hastens democratic decline.
