Valuable info about the Physics Nobel Prize today from Prof. Joseph Barranco at SFSU on Martinis and Devoret being a grad student and postdoc in Clarke's lab at UC Berkeley & Clark and Devoret being immigrants. "California *public* education made this happen. Immigration made this happen." ⚛️
Joseph Barranco posted on social media: Go Bears! Nobel Prize in Physics goes to 3 physicists studying mesoscopic quantum phenomena... Work was done in the 1980s in UC Berkeley Professor John Clarke's lab with his graduate student John Martinis and postdoctoral fellow Michel Devoret... all 3 share the Nobel Prize. Must also point out that both Clarke and Devoret are immigrants from the UK and France, respectively. All 3 are pioneers in the race to build the most powerful quantum supercomputers. California *public* education made this happen. Immigration made this happen.

Much of the #Arctic Circle observed warmer than average conditions in September 2025. Some of the largest anomalies were over Greenland and northern Canada, though regionally-dependent anomalies were over Siberia.

High resolution version updated monthly for download at zacklabe.com/arctic-tempe...
Two polar stereographic maps side-by-side showing actual air temperatures in September 2025 on the left and the temperature anomaly on the right for September 2025. Anomalies are calculated relative to a 1981-2010 baseline. All data uses ERA5 reanalysis. Most areas are warmer than average.

Last night, NASA's Perseverance rover looked up at the night sky once more, to capture interstellar #comet 3I/Atlas flying by the red planet.

The distance was "only" 0.2 AU or 30 Mio km, far closer than the comet ever got to Earth. 🔭 #3IAtlas

One of the things we are going to have to be very, very aware of is that a lot of people who are being heavily armed right now will simply not be willing to accept the results of a democratic election because they will go to jail.

This is one of the lesser known (but tragic) consequences of Gen AI. It’s not just about theft of IP, which is usually mentioned, it’s about damage to the information infrastructure of underfunded archives, libraries and museums etc. with long term consequences for them and for researchers.

by the way, all those benign AI bots crawling the internet for for-profit LLMs, yeah it turns out when 9,000 hit your archive catalogue or image database all at once they break the system. This is an emerging sector issue.

The last weeks have literally seen humans labouring to feed the machines...

Moon formation drama, a bit more understood 🌚

The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope has found evidence of a ‘construction yard’ for moons around a large exoplanet, CT Cha b, which lies 625 light-years from Earth.

This is an illustration of a young planet with a surrounding disc of dust and gas, potentially forming moons. The planet, which appears red, is shown at lower right, enveloped by a cloudy disc. The host star appears at upper left, and glows yellow, with its own reddish disc of debris. The black background of space is speckled with stars. At the bottom of the illustration, graphics of molecules are listed in the following order: Acetylene, Carbon Dioxide, Ethane, Benzene, Hydrogen cyanide.

Our politicians (including GOPs, because I can't imagine ALL of them are pro-invading US cities. Do not let them off the hook.) should state intent to prosecute the current administration with treason & remind service members & law enforcement that history does not look back fondly on collaborators.

There’s understandably been a lot of focus on the CDC lately, but I don’t anyone to miss the bad tidings from the EPA.

-Scientists at the Office of Water have been ordered to stop publishing papers without review by a political appointee.

-Office of Research and Development has been eliminated.

The base tip is 20% on the post-tax amount for a full-service restaurant. 15% for fast-casual/pickup orders. For delivery drivers, enough to make sure they at least receive $10 total, especially if the delivery is small. I'm not rich, but I believe labor should be paid for.

A majority of Americans say they would tip 15% or less for an average restaurant dining experience, including 2% who wouldn’t leave a tip at all.

Adults in lower-income households & those ages 65+ are more likely than their counterparts to say they would tip 15% or less in a situation like this.
Chart shows that for a majority of Americans, a standard tip when dining at a sit-down restaurant is 15% or less.
