Trying to forecast the future is prone to uncertainty, though I am probably closer to the alarmist end of the spectrum.
This article is most useful in highlighting the dismissals of such warnings. Big question is why? Normalcy bias? Not being vulnerable?

The Americans Who Saw All This Coming—but Were Ignored and Maligned
Call them the Cassandras: the people—mostly not white and male—who smelled the fascism all over Trump from jump street. Why were they “alarmists,” and how did “anti-alarmism” become cool?

I assume people are veering away from self help books. I love a good nonfiction book on something I'm interested in, but fiction has so much to offer the reader.
Selling #nonfiction #books could be the toughest sale of all this season as reality becomes tougher to face (I'm not even going to say how much fiction I've read as a distraction this year, but its a lot). The category seeing an 8.4% year over year sales decline.
Are we falling out of love with nonfiction?
In the early 2020s, readers flocked to books to explain political turbulence. But is the world now too grim to read about – and are podcasters taking the place of authors?
