Based on social media, you might think the US was in the middle of a Butlerian Jihad. But IRL neither party has shown much appetite for regulating AI; universities aren't trying to ban it; content industries are adapting to it. The venting is anti-correlated with change.

Part of it was filmed in my hometown and it used a house of someone in my high school graduating class. Got to see Natalie Portman on set one day. Can't believe it was over two decades ago

This is because media companies spend quite literally the past 50 years convincing individuals that copyright as it is today is a neutral moral law of the world in which you have to play, and not a very recent development.

i think the root of this is that at some point ppl forgot that copyright is a _policy choice_ in order to achieve outcomes that are agreed upon as “morally good”, not a moral good in of itself!

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

Yeah my defense of AI is couched in a certain amount of sympathy for people who have every reason to distrust a lot of these corporations. But people have really overshot their vituperations at the expense of genuine insight.
