Our research on Long-eared owl plumage is getting some media traction, which is exciting! But I want to clarify that we're certainly not the first to discover or describe these pigments in owls - owl banders have been using fluorescence in the field for decades! (1/2)

Fish cranial kinesis model is now listed in my Etsy shop! Hopefully useful for showing the mechanism that opens and closes a teleost fish's mouth.

Set up a Patreon for the art even though I have no idea what I'm doing. How do other traditional artists use it? I have a tier where I would send a monthly mini print to subscribers. Any other ideas?

Sad to report that we've lost another #kakapo, and a particularly significant one. Solstice was the last kākāpō rediscovered, found on Rakiura in 1997. She died on the weekend as a result of complications from the #disease cloacitis. There are now 237 kākāpō left. #conservation #parrots #birds

When a huge creative company tells you (the consumer or worker) that they have no $$ for projects, maybe they’re telling truth, but remember…I, a ding-dong armed with a pure heart & 50k Bluesky followers, manage to get new projects off the ground constantly while paying artists for their work. So.

Do any of you have a fun map-reading and orienteering activity you’d be willing to share? I’d like to see some examples as I’m putting a skill session together for my natural history class. It could be something done in-class, or it could involve an outdoor scavenger hunt-type exercise (1 hour).

Holy cow a lot is going on in the US right now. You may also need to take a deep breath and look closely at a painted lady butterfly.
Painted lady butterfly, Nymphalidae, from Bandera County Texas, Lost Maples State Park. It's a closeup of the head and wings; the antennae have "knobs" on the end, and the wings are a pretty pattern of mossy browns with a splash of pinkish orange. The "knobs" on the antennae are characteristic of Nymphalids, and their first pair of legs are reduced.
