I love this ine. Everyone is great. But the stars of the show are the city, the trains, the tunnels, and the transit authority's bulb-lit routing boards.

In the passing of Jane Goodall, I took the chance to revisit Donna Haraway's revolutionary book "Primate Visions". Goodall makes an important, complicated appearance here, along with a host of other women leaders in primatology, who turned the field on its head. www.versobooks.com/products/136...

Wrapping up my 8th and 9th grant since April when almost all my labs funding was terminated. $1.1M. So far got $330k funded by rewriting a grant for work I was supposedly funded to do. This is the least fun I have had in this job. I know I am sadly not alone and more important things are defunded

Just finished watching The Sting—great movie. Released in 1973, set in 1939.

I regret to inform you that the same time difference is a movie set in 1991.

Good. Night!

Also, a paper in Journal of Political Ecology from Gabi Clark (2024) on ag science in Palestine in the 50s. That looks promising, and includes Lowdermilk.

No sir, another gap from my miseducation. Given his work on Palestine and TVA extensions to the Middle East, I'd think there's a book out there somewhere. Best bet: ask Diana Davis, who may have covered Lowdermilk in her "The Arid Lands". I do see interesting work by Robert Rook.

A relentless defender of local agricultural knowledge in Mexico as well, and a harsh critique of the Green Revolution, even as it was just becoming a thing.

Interesting to read Carl Sauer arguing in 1966 that American anthropologists (Kroeber and Steward specifically) underestimated the Indigenous populations of present-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic in 1492 by a factor of of ten, also discussing the extent of land under cultivation at that time.

New edition of The Commons is out, and its major. The challenge of microplastics and flooding, along with the secrets of leaf-peeping and revelations about Wisconsin's freshwater springs. All in font sizes I can read. Kudos to Nelson Institute's incredible writing staff! nelson.wisc.edu/the-commons/

Growers in California tend to not be as anti-solar as other places with farmland the United States because the questions are (1) Do I make more more money in agriculture? and (2) Do I have water? If the answer is no to either, the answer is yes to solar.
dustinmulvaney.bsky.social
The primary obstacle to solar on farmland in California is arguably the Williamson Act, a law intended to stop suburban sprawl. A new bill proposes to allow ranchers and farmers to pause Williamson Act contracts for solar on fallowed, water-stressed farmland. This article unpacks the tensions.☀️🔌💡

The valley that was once a refuge for people fleeing the Dust Bowl is facing its own reckoning with dust and water scarcity. And it has prompted scientists and policy experts to wonder what to do with land left behind. Why not solar? they ask. Now, @buffywicks.bsky.social weighs in with a new bill.

Really excited to start reading @sprucehen.bsky.social 's new book 'Ice Geographies'! From reading the prologue I can tell this is exactly the kind of narrative I hope to see more of in the coming years - and I'm sure this book'll help achieve that :) Plus the cover art is wonderful!
