What is the history of member-driven change in the AAG?

Our archival research has shown that member-driven political activity has been common in AAG's history, including struggles around the Equal Rights Amendment; the US funding of contras in Nicaragua; and nuclear proliferation and war.
What is the history of member-driven change in the AAG? (hint: there have indeed been previous member votes in AAG, and some were even on "troubling world events"!). The graphic shows the AAG newsletter heading and describes following posts as "a look into the AAG archives"

Our research on Microsoft’s data centers is out and it’s 😬

💡Huge energy demand (as much as New England by 2030!)

⛽️ Fossil fuel reliance (most data centers in states with ≥50% FF grids)

🏫Local impacts (data centers used to justify more gas)

Learn more and take action: stand.earth/microsoft-ai
Background photo of a computer chip with smoking rising from a Microsoft logo on it. Stand.earth logo in top right corner. Text reads "Microsoft has invested more than $80 billion in building out AI. The real cost is yet to come." "Global Ramifications, Local Impact" REPORT icon. White background. Text reads “A hyperscale data center can use as much energy as an entire city. Whether that data center runs on fossil fuels or renewable energy matters - a lot. As of right now most Microsoft data centers are in states with grids that are
≥50% dependent on fossil fuels.” Photo of a data center in the center of the image.
Red background. Text reads “600%” “Microsoft's North American AI data center build-out is set to grow by 600% through 2030, and will demand as much electricity as the entire New England Region.” Graph shows exponentially increasing electricity demand starting in fiscal year 24 and estimating as far as fiscal year 30. White background. Text reads “Unless surging energy demand from Microsoft's data centers is met with round-the-clock renewable electricity, it will lead to a huge increase in climate and local pollution, including extending the life of coal plants as well as new fossil fuel power plants and pipelines to meet the electricity needs of the data centers.” Photo of a polluting data center, with photo credit reading “Credit: Shelley Robbins”.

Protests are powerful, but they aren’t the only tool for change.

KF Research Fellow @devawo.bsky.social explains how social movements are building community protection strategies that are quieter, local, and just as impactful.

Self-serving politicians may want you to believe that violent crime is rampant and repeat offenders are to blame – but two things to remember:

1. Overall crime rates are at historically low levels
2. 74% of all jail bookings are for charges that are not "violent"
Graph showing that US crime rates continue to fall, and preliminary data indicate that the 2024 crime rate was the lowest since 1961 Graph titled: The most serious charge for most people who are booked into jail is related to drugs, property, or public order – not violence

Firing a Black woman for quoting a white man about how unintelligent he believes Black women are is a clear example of how misogynoir, white supremacy & ableism work together to harm Black women uniquely. That is how intersecting oppressions work.

Opposing political violence requires that we condemn Charlie Kirk’s death.

Opposing political violence also requires that we condemn Charlie Kirk’s life.

Charlie Kirk spent his life encouraging his allies on the far-right to think violence was legitimate and concerns about it were fake.

Mainstream pundits have instantly sanitized and ignored Charlie Kirk's core political project and its impacts. He has been remembered by the mainstream press as someone they merely disagreed with, a debate me-guy whose words and actions had zero consequences:

The mainstream media seems entirely uninterested in explaining Charlie Kirk's work.
