NEW: Nine months ago, Elon Musk's nascent, DOGE effort killed off a beloved pediatric cancer initiative in the govt funding fight. I circled back to see where those bills now stood. What I discovered was less scandalous but no less depressing.

Elon Musk Torpedoed a Beloved Pediatric Cancer Bill. It’s Yet to Recover.
Sometimes, a good piece of legislation fails to become a law for one simple, stupid reason: congressional inertia.

The judge, for his part, warned the government that the case shouldn't get off track because of classified information issues.

Either the information will be declassified or we'll go through the "fastest CIPA process you've ever seen in your life," he said.

The government's lack of a plan prompted Comey's counsel, Fitzgerald, to say that the prosecution "put the cart before the horse."

Usually, you figure out classified information issues in consultation w/ DOJ's national security division *before* bringing a case, he said.

MORE: The government indicated that it is not yet sure how it intends to handle the potential use of classified information at trial — i.e., whether it will use the process set out in the Classified Information Procedures Act (CIPA) or opt to declassify the information.

Nearly unanimous bipartisan support for expanding and planning Virtual Power Plant resources that would bring much-needed flexibility to our grid in CA - and save all of us $$$. Disappointed (is the polite word) in Gov. Newsom’s baffling veto. 💡🔌 @advancedenergyunited.org

California could save billions of dollars in grid and energy costs by tapping rooftop solar, batteries, EVs, and smart appliances as virtual power plants. Why did Governor Gavin Newsom veto three widely supported VPP bills meant to enable those savings?

Why did Newsom veto California’s virtual power plant bills?
Supporters say the bills would have helped ease the state’s energy affordability crisis while strengthening grid reliability.

Affidavit from Cook County Public Defender (yay!) Sharone Mitchell Jr, testifying that his clients are being deprived of their due process rights by ICE/CBP.
For example, during the first three weeks of September 2025, ICE agents have

entered courthouses in at least four separate court locations: the Daley Center, the Leighton

Criminal Court Building, the Domestic Violence Courthouse, and the branch courts at 111th Street.

ICE agents have arrested people attempting to attend their civil or criminal court hearings. ICE

agents have been observed at multiple Cook County courthouses in a single day. Employees of our

office have witnessed the following ICE actions in Cook County courts in recent months:

               a. On July 24, 2025, at the suburban Maywood courthouse, a man was taken

into custody by plainclothes ICE agents inside the courthouse after he left his court hearing.

The agents never showed a warrant or identified themselves during the arrest.

               b. On September 2, 2025, at the Domestic Violence court located at 555 W.

Harrison in Chicago, a man was detained and arrested outside of the courthouse building

       after attending his court hearing.

               c. On September 3, 2025, at the Domestic Violence court located at 555 W.

Harrison in Chicago, a woman attempting to attend her misdemeanor court case was

stopped inside the court building by ICE agents. ICE agents arrested her, and she missed

her court hearing, during which her misdemeanor case was subsequently dismissed.

Affidavit from Maywood ASA Jose Villarreal, testifying under oath that the presence of ICE/CPB is harming his office's prosecution of crimes.
Aggressive immigration enforcement by Homeland Security agents in and around
Cook County courthouses undermines that trust and cooperation by instilling fear of arrest and
deportation in the victims and witnesses of violent crime.

10. The activities of the Department of Homeland Security in and around the 4th
Municipal District courthouse, the Domestic Violence courthouse, and the main Cook County
Criminal Courthouse located at 2650 S. California in Chicago has materially harmed the State's
Attorney’s office’s efforts to protect the victims of crime and uphold the law through criminal
prosecution.

Tae For instance, I am familiar with a murder prosecution in which a witness has
expressed to my ASAs that she is afraid to come to court and testify for fear that she could be
arrested by Homeland Security agents. In this case, the fearful witness is the wife of the murder
victim.

12 Their fear of arrest makes it more likely that her husband’s murderers will go free
and justice will be denied.

Among other things, Cook County just filed an affidavit in the IL v. Trump case showing that violent crime rates are DOWN in Chicago.

This is from the affidavit of Guy Lissuro, Deputy Chief of the Cook County State's Attorney.
The Chicago Police Department (“CPD”) has provided us with data showing that the
number of violent crimes has decreased in 2025 when compared to the same time
period (January 1 – October 6) in 2024, as set forth in the chart below:
