I remember reading this in 2012, right at the beginning of my career, and deciding it was the high watermark. I feel like essays like this were a lot less common back then, especially on a major site. It had a big impact on me.

'Night and the City' by Chris Donlan remains one of the finest online articles on game urbanism ever. Somehow simultaneously personal, historical, and objective it is an excellent read, and a reminder that L.A. Noir remains truly unique.

I really enjoyed No More In Hell 2 and Alpha Response this year.

Not sure if The Outlast Trials might also count.

I haven't finished it quite yet but I am increasingly inclined to think that Silent Hill f is a good game.

The problem is only getting worse and nobody has any idea what to do about it, other than to say "well, we talked about that loads already and it doesn't matter".

It feels like we all know what we're supposed to do, in our heads, as players. But should we be the ones who have to do the work?

That line—what we're supposed to view as real or "true to the story" or however you want to put it & what we're supposed to view as happening in the exaggerated dream realm that comes w/a work's status as a VIDEO GAME—has always fascinated me & here, via M:TOC, Ed builds up to an important question!

Great work in this month's issue from cover to cover. Behind the scenes on First Light. A huge retrospective on Peter Molyneux. Undertale at ten years old. How Blendo makes games. The return of RedOctane. How Time Crisis 1 is also making a comeback. And a lot more.
