My work life revolves around accessibility and user research. I also write books for children and young adults, watch too much TV, and love seeing alt-tagged pictures of your dogs. Profile picture is a selfie with our pittie petting my head. She/her.

Hi, would you like to see how ridiculously cute our mutt was as a puppy?

Steady yourself.

If you like a writer's work, tell them! Email, LinkedIn message, DM, even in person at an event. It can make a huge difference in their lives, especially right now with declining freelance budgets, layoffs, stagnant salaries, the threat of AI, and dwindling book advances.

The hashtag #accessibility allows you to find lots of accessibility-related resources on Twitter and LinkedIn. To find accessibility resources in Spanish, use the hashtag #accesibilidad. The hashtag #accessibilité helps you find resources in French.

Hello, my beloved mutuals! Here is a quick thing you can do that will delight your followers and expand your reach:

1. Go to Settings.
2. Select "Accessibility."
3. Turn on the option to "require alt text before posting."
4. Get in the habit of describing your images.
5. Thrive.

Not to brag, but I am on a streak of three good library books in a row.

The first was "Nightwatching," by Tracy Sierra. So suspenseful I had to reach across the aisle of the plane a couple times to grab my husband's arm and hiss "this book is so scary!"
I would like to have a feed full of everyone's library book hauls.

Just FYI if you’re posting images of blobs of text, your device may have a little button that lets you copy all of that text so you can effortlessly put it all in the alt prompt, which allows for like 2000+ characters.

Describing images isn’t just accessibility, it’s human connection. Silvia Maggi reminds us that thoughtful alt text turns visuals into shared experiences.

Silvia Maggi Design - From human to human, describing images is the least you can do
The use of generated text might save time for who creates, but the results are lazy and unhelpful. Don’t be that person.

In hashtags, it helps if each new word starts with a capital letter. Otherwise, sighted users could see a string of letters and not immediately know where one word ends and a new word begins. Capitalized words also help screen readers properly read out the hashtag.
