"Worse than how these legislative impasses have become commonplace in the rhythms and cadence of D.C., though, is how Democrats do not seem to know how to use them to build political capital, leverage, and public consensus."

Bridging my current life in Chicago and my past life in D.C., I argue today at @newrepublic.com that Democrats should ~never~ vote to fund this government. Make John Thune blow up Senate rules and Republicans wholly own the U.S. extra-military military doing war crimes against us, funded by us.
The Case for the Forever Shutdown
Senate Democrats actually allowing the GOP to stop funding the government is only the first step. Now they have to make the case that Trump’s government is illegitimate.

I believe these are the first Chicagoland NTBs, which is significant because grand juries sit for a long time— we didn’t previously know that Chicago’s GJs were fed up with this stuff and now we do.

Add it to the tally.

Seems like we’re getting up to 20+ grand jury no true bills just from what I’ve seen. Absolutely remarkable.

ICE is acting In Odium Fidei:
jackjenkins.me
Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

Love the potential Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) angle!
jackjenkins.me
NEW: I spoke to clergy and faith leaders who've joined protests at the Chicago-area ICE facility.

Three say they've been shot with pepper balls, sometimes while praying.

All say ICE is also violating their religious freedom, and one is arguing it in court. religionnews.com/2025/10/07/i...
Religious protesters say ICE threatens religious freedom in Chicago
(RNS) — Despite potential danger, religious leaders and faith activists have been a visible presence at Chicago-area ICE protests, some waving signs with slogans such as ‘Love thy neighbor’ and ‘Who w...

I love living in a city full of immigrants and tons and tons of people who are not at all like me and not like each other. It makes us all better and it makes our city better. I know I’m preaching to the choir by saying this on the lib app but I sometimes just get so overwhelmed by how special it is

Never heard this but it appears to be an old-timey name for the same thing. Our judges would look to see if the term was used in multiple publications and make a ruling. Too close for me to call!

@kenjennings.bsky.social would you have accepted "Tanning Index" as an alternative name for "UV Index" on tonight's final Jeopardy? (My Dad wants to know!)

Concord NH will be having municipal elections! The candidate I've endorsed (Aislinn Kalob) for my ward's City Council seat is facing some pretty fierce competition, so she'll need some strong support from progressives to prevail!

2025 isn’t an “off year.” Across the country, voters will head to the polls in elections that could shape millions of lives — from New York City to Seattle, from Virginia to New Jersey, from Boston to Detroit, and in thousands of other cities and towns nationwide.

Anyways, my position is that the accessibility concerns outweigh the AI training concerns, so thus you should always use alt text.

I have actually seen a bit of this from some of the Japanese artists I follow:

I'd put money on alt text for accessibility vs alt text being easy labels for training being a big blow up some time in the future, the posting will be incredible
