So many policies meant to improve conditions for ECRs end up with a penalty for the ECR. My university makes us do this too, issue open calls for projects designed by a PhD or postdoc candidate even when named in grant 🤦‍♀️
Best case scenario is wasted time for candidate & other ECRs who apply 🤬

it has happened to me twice today at 2 different universities that I (senior postdoc) wrote a grant together with a PI, and the department tries to kick me off the grant. One was awarded (and my name is listed on the grant), and now the department says the team will have to advertise my position.

I tried making a figure explaining how the sum of variances law can be understood as the diagonal of a bivariate normal, and how a correlation between the two antecedent variables — such as under assortative mating — will result in greater variance and more cases above a threshold.

Tried to explain this to the students this afternoon (tried is emphasized), but will cite you next semester

Reminds me of how sometimes people make a technical argument when there is a much more fundamental conceptual point.

Yes, agree. I think it is most likely confounding, but the pop in effect that for <28 days also in the rating scale sibling design from 2013 warrants some more studies. Someone should volunteer to me to do a new sibling fixed effect and MR MoBa study on the national math tests

So the truth is that I think it is often the best option and wise to take it when needed (particularly under fever and when the GP say so), but also say that we don’t know for sure when it comes to the very continuous long term use.
eivindy.bsky.social
In the pediatrics article I could adjust for indications and stratify by infections vs e.g. pain finding that short term use was even slightly protective under fever, but the very long term use effect was consistent publications.aap.org/pediatrics/a...
Prenatal Exposure to Acetaminophen and Risk of ADHD
We identify a strong association between long-term acetaminophen use and offspring ADHD that is not explained by indications of use or familial ADHD.

I set out doing the paternal effect believing it was a negative control, but then a toxicologist at UiO pointed out that long very high doses could be no picnic for the testicles (my takeaway was just doubt in this specific case, since I could not evaluate the reasoning)
