The EU Common Fisheries Policy is delivering results for fishers and for nature - when well applied.

While laws exist to reduce and outlaw discarding, the question of how to make them work in practice remains.

Across regions and governance systems, a consistent message emerged: discard bans work when they are embedded in a wider framework of prevention, monitoring, transparency and cooperation.

This surge in activity, as total fishing hours increased by 65% between 2019 and 2024, has been driven largely by the Chinese fleet.

The growing pressure on this keystone fishery and lack of regulation threatens ecosystem collapse and has left vulnerable crew on the fleet exposed to abuse.

However, they are under serious threat. Between 2000 and 2022, mangrove coverage in the country fell by almost 20%, with the Central Region suffering a devastating 66% decline.

This has weakened local fisheries, increased coastal vulnerability, and released stored carbon back into the atmosphere.
