“Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair's plan for running the Gaza Strip after the war proposes a multilayered, hierarchical structure in which senior international diplomats and businesspeople are on top and the Palestinians running things on the ground are at the bottom.”

A century removed from Western colonial powers casually drawing Middle Eastern borders with a ruler while disregarding the will of local populations, the region gets Tony Blair to dream up schemes of governing Gaza with little say by its people.

There are caveats, as always. But indeed surprisingly many people in the Finnish upper middle class and even in the 1 % support the Nordic model of organizing societies.

The very countries that constantly lecture everyone else about human rights, peace, diplomacy, and democracy... are the same countries that export the weapons that destroy all of the above.
A chart my statistica showing percentages of global weapons export. USA 41.7%, France 10.9%, Russia 10.5%, China 5.8%, germany 5.6%, Italy 4.3%, United Kingdom 3.7%, Spain 2.7%.

The US will have to consider itself on notice that the Gulf states are now formally moving on and that, while none of them are interested in breaking ties with Washington, the idea that they can rely on the US for defense is, for the time being, practically discarded

The GCC states now consider an attack on one to be an attack on all, and Saudi Arabia may be covered by a Pakistani rather than U.S. military umbrella.

Every word of this extraordinary trainwreck of an interview is worth reading. The self-serving, moral bankruptcy of a celebrated liberal (and legal) scholar, in his own words

To reiterate: a senior member of the US government with a portfolio in MENA said outright that Hezbollah has absolutely no reason to disarm
diplomatofnight.com
Everyone is riffing on Tom Barrack's comments about submission but they're by far the least interesting part of the interview. He outright says that the US wants to exacerbate sectarian tensions in Lebanon, that US funding for the Lebanese army is to suppress its own people, and that Hezb is right.

Consistent with what I heard from others in the Biden White House.

He couldn’t recognize Palestinians as human beings on par with Israelis.

"I had pleaded with Joe [...] to extend the same empathy he showed to the suffering of Ukrainians to the suffering of innocent Gazan civilians"

"But he couldn't do it: While he could passionately state, 'I am a Zionist,' his remarks about innocent Palestinians came off as inadequate and forced."
Biden response to Gaza was "inadequate," Harris says in book
It's part of Harris' larger effort in the book to distance herself from Biden after not doing so during last year's campaign.

Israel bombed a Houthi-aligned newspaper office in Yemen, killing at least 31 journalists in the second largest targeted killing of media workers CPJ has ever recorded. One more expansion of Israel’s claimed right to bomb anyone, anywhere, any time with impunity.
