Meta ends (at least for now) political ads in the EU today. Per their ad library data, they've run nearly 11,000,000 different political, social and issue ads in the EU since 2018 and made around €800m from them.

The official database of works eligible for the Anthropic AI settlement has been released and, as I suspected, many authors are screwed. Basically, if your books weren't officially registered with the US Copyright Office you're out of luck. 1/ secure.anthropiccopyrightsettlement.com/lookup/results
Welcome to the Anthropic Copyright Settlement Website
Are you the legal or beneficial copyright owner of a book included in the Anthropic Copyright Settlement?
You could get a payment from the $1.5 billion Settlement.

I spoke to parents who are letting their young kids play with generative AI and tried to sort through some of the questions they have about it.

"I don’t know what this is doing to their brains," one dad told me.

Meanwhile, Sam Altman says, "Kids love ChatGPT on voicemode."
‘My son genuinely believed it was real’: Parents are letting little kids play with AI. Are they wrong?
Some believe AI can spark their child’s imagination through personalized stories and generative images. Scientists are wary of its affect on creativity

This is why we fund scientists to study things like oyster slobber even if you don’t think it sounds important
leahmcelrath.bsky.social
⚠️ Chinese researchers have invented bone glue that mimics how oysters stick to surfaces underwater.

The adhesive can reportedly repair orthopedic fractures in 2-3 minutes, even in blood-rich environments, and is bioabsorbable.

The printed version is out today! Here we discussed how social credit system, an Orwellian Chinese Other, becomes a stand-in for Western anxieties about authoritarianism, technology goes wrong, quantification of everyday life, and shifting global power.

We know OpenAI is not making enough money to cover its insane costs, so by creating these kinds of tools, what they are doing is opening additional markets for disinformation, political intervention, scammers, conspiracy theorists, blackmail, and other types of crimes.
Crime pays off, apparently...

OpenAI employees are very excited about how well their new AI tool can create fake videos of people doing crimes and have definitely thought through all the implications of this

Streeting rules out VAT on private healthcare.

Govt levies VAT on private school fees. Why not on healthcare? Billions can be raised.

Private sector freeloads on NHS trained staff, doesn't pay for training. Makes excessive profits from NHS contracts.

I am so bad at giving articles/chapters a good title.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to make it snappy? 🤔😐
elinorcarmi.bsky.social
Exactly. Plus, Eisenberg has that neurotic and awkwardness of Zuckerberg that I just don't think he will be able to portray as well.... but I guess let's see!

A real shame they didn't bring back Jesse Eisenberg, who was an amazing Zuckerberg.... Sorry I don't think Strong will manage to be as good...

“I think we can have a crime-free city and civil liberties. . . . We can have it all.”

I agree, so call me when you develop drones to chase billionaires for their tax evasion (biggest crime), which costs countries billions and can solve many problems we have 😉

Brilliant thread from @keyne-unable.bsky.social on why the introduction of digital ID (and the encoding of 'birth sex' in a single government record) has long been an objective of anti-trans campaigners in the UK 👇
keyne-unable.bsky.social
Digital ID is a terrible idea for a lot of reasons: technical, political, economic. Especially with the involvement of far right tech oligarchs and it being explicitly sold as a way of surveilling people so as to imprison or deport immigrants.

But there's a layer which many aren't seeing...

Without further ado, here is the trailer for Jeffrey Epstein: Bad Pedophile.

Against all odds, it will air in select theatres on October 2nd, along with the theatrical debut of Sex House.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow.

And, yes, this is real.

Literally, I was gonna write that same thing about Blade Runner!!! I also won't go and see Tron, but I genuinely don't understand why he gets hired over and over again! All his latest films flopped!

Beyond being a possible cult leader and being accused for SA, Jared Leto is just not an amazing actor.
So why did Disney have to ruin the Tron franchise with him?? 😫

The internet's in a bad place. We're not winning. How can we turn things around? We need money.

What parts of the internet 1) are still under democratic control and 2) are in a position to produce significant revenue? It's mostly down to Wikipedia.

But there's more… 🧵

13 years ago, I moved to London, UK 😮
I know I complain a lot about the bad coffee and food (which has improved!), but I still think that London is one of the best cities in the world, and I feel so lucky to have a job I love, friends I love and despite Brexit 🫠, I still love living here💜
