One of the more incredible stories out of LA this year has been how a taco review blog became the best on-the-ground coverage of ICE raids in the city.

They do a dispatch every day, follow-up on the kidnapped people (which almost no media outlet has done), and fact-check government claims.

so can someone explain how it’s good when AI takes our jobs but bad when the immigrants do?

Mayor of Hyattsville responds to the violent ICE confrontations that have happened there over the last few weeks with a confusing statement in which he says it's illegal for local cops to intervene in ICE official duties but also it's their duty to intervene for bystanders, agents, arrestee safety:
Residents,
Over the past several weeks we have witnessed a significant increase in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in our community. This has been deeply concerning to our residents, me, and my fellow Councilmembers.
As a municipality, we are limited in our authority. Immigration enforcement is the responsibility of the federal government. In fact, it is against the law for anyone, including local law enforcement, to intervene while ICE agents are in the commission of their official duties. However, the City hereby reaffirms the values that characterized us and for which we stand. As such, we want to reassure residents that our Hyattsville Police Officers are not immigration agents. The Department does not and will not inquire about, track, or maintain records regarding an individual's immigration status. Residents should not hesitate to contact the Hyattsville Police Department to report a crime, a dangerous situation, or an unsafe activity in our community. If a dangerous situation related to ICE activity is reported to or observed by an officer, our officers have a duty to intervene to ensure the safety of bystanders, the agents, and the arrestee. If officers are aware that an arrest is for an immigration violation, they will not participate in the arrest.
As your Mayor, I have been in regular communication with the Maryland Governor's Office on Immigrant Affairs to know our rights, report our concerns, and stay up to date on resources available for impacted households, families, and community members. Information provided by the state, Prince George's County, and local non-profits is available at hyattsville.org/assistance. 1, along with your City Council, want all our residents to feel protected and have the information and resources they need to safeguard their rights. Together with City staff, we share a goal of making Hyattsville a safe place for everyone.
Sincerely, %.

This new column by @tressiemcphd.bsky.social makes me think about when I recently had to talk to the police for yet another safety plan, I tried to “lighten” the mood by saying that we all knew this wasn’t my first rodeo. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/01/o...
For at least the past 15 years, my colleagues in academia have grappled with angry letters to university officials for doing their jobs. They have weathered campaigns for their firing. They have contended with an internet army obsessed with doxxing them, their parents, their kids. I’ve been contacted by the F.B.I. more than once in my career. Not because I hold any important state secrets or know a biker gang but because one of my colleagues has lived with so much sustained harassment from right-wing “activists” that it has become a matter of federal concern. Watch lists (one of which was constructed by Kirk’s organization) do not distinguish between public intellectuals at wealthy enclaves and hoi polloi who teach popular classes at cash-strapped schools. In either case, an army of trained provocateurs stands ready to destroy their lives to prove their bona fides as conservative activists.

ICE is one of the most well funded military force on the planet, entirely used internally on it’s own citizens, and completely loyal to a far right fascist dictator. if democratic politicians are not on board with abolishing ICE, they must be replaced

I have approximately zero following on this app, sharing in the hopes it can get in front of the right person. A man I went to college with’s wife was kidnapped by ICE at a green card hearing, and he’s trying to find a reporter who will speak to him about the situation

Hmm. Maybe I’m overreacting to the week-long Twitter doxxing campaign where people tagged ICE and various government officials to arrest me. And the headlines about Palantir and domestic surveillance of phones. No battery issues before, but I’ll take it.

Hi quick question. When I woke up, my phone was at 100% battery. After I made my kid breakfast, it dropped to 54%. Am I being tracked lol
