they don’t want you to know how they treat prisoners because it will grieve you to know it, which is natural and human, and because of your normal human reaction you will want the system changed. It’s important to them that your natural aversion to how the system works not be engaged.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

I made a vinyl sticker bonus question for my #Dante midterm. Everyone got it right and now there are 70 stickers floating around campus marking our community 👹👹🥹
An oval-shaped vinyl sticker with a dark purple background and two cartoon labubu characters. The left monster is red with lavender face and hands. His bunny ears droop forward, he stands pigeon-toed, and his face is crumpled with fright. At right, a pale gray monster with a ghostly white face extends a reassuring hand to the fearful one. He wears a laurel crown and carries a golden book in his other hand. Since designing the sticker I have learned that labubus have 9 teeth, so these monsters with 6 and 8 teeth are technically lafufus. Who are they??

eventually politicians need to start advocating for criminal and civil penalties for people involved in fabricating stories to get citizens incarcerated.

or, put another way: a society that would like to keep functioning has to discourage baldfaced lying, especially by authorities

The Italian edition of my first novel, translated by the wonderful Chiara Buffa, is available later this week, 10/10/25, from NN Editore in Milan. And this cover makes my old teen witch heart glad.

www.nneditore.it/libro/979125...
An illustration of a fox dressed in the ribcage of a human, the eyes white with death or transfiguration, surrounded by red and blue-green leaves. The image has a large San serif bold N superimposed, with the image clear inside the letter and faintly colored by a rust orange fade otherwise, the trademark of the house, NN Editore.

The text in white reads ALEXANDER CHEE

Manuscript illustration of a long-haired woman arguing in court that as long as she has satisfied her husband’s sexual needs, and the feeble chump sitting in the hot seat testifies that indeed she has, she has every right to do what she pleases with her surplus of sexual capacity. The woman is hot and many people have gathered to see if she’ll get away with adultery. Boccaccio’s Decameron 6.7, BnF Ms. It. 63, f. 202r.

We need a bigger national spotlight on this building raid, fam. Agents dropped from helicopters onto the roof. Citizens and non-citizens alike were dragged from their homes in the night. People who weren't kidnapped during the raid had their belongings seized after the fact. This is madness.

Washington Post dismantled the platform Jamal wrote on. Discarded the fellowship they created in his memory.

They fired me unjustly for speaking the truth.

But I’ll never stop talking about my friend, writer, and amazing human, Jamal Khashoggi.

RIP, Jamal.

Jane Goodall woven into our family lore ❤️
A tiny photo album open to two very similar compositions. Left: a baby sitting on a couch next to a plush orangutan bigger than himself. The baby meets the gaze of the plushie with wonder. At right, Jane Goodall sits with her back to the wall next to a female gorilla. Goodall turns to look at her face and they seem to be in peaceful conversation.

Lauren Berlant’s intro to Cruel Optimism (Duke, 2011) is in the neighborhood 😕
cal sense of the present affectively as immanence, emanation, atmosphere, or emergence. Perturbation is Deleuze's word for disturbances in the atmosphere that constitute situations whose shape can only be forged by continuous reaction and transversal movement, releasing subjects from the norma-tivity of intuition and making them available for alternative ordinaries.® The situation is therefore a genre of social time and practice in which a relation of persons and worlds is sensed to be changing but the rules for habitation and the genres of storytelling about it are unstable, in chaos. Chapter 5,
"Nearly Utopian, Nearly Normal," argues that the precarious public sphere has generated a new popular variation, the "situation tragedy." In the situation comedy, the subject whose world is not too destabilized by a "situation" that arises performs a slapstick maladjustment that turns out absurdly and laughably, without destroying very much. In the situation tragedy, the subject's world is fragile beyond repair, one gesture away from losing all access to sustaining its fantasies: the situation threatens utter, abject unraveling.

We have allowed the lazy, grifting Silicon Valley charlatans into the front door, & in doing so, we have learned just how many of our own colleagues & administrators simply are not interested in the actual business of education. It's incredibly demoralizing.

Thanks so much for your reporting on this, Ben. I just got an email from my campus's IT office triumphantly advertising free student access to four different AI models -- at the same time as we have a hiring freeze, caps on grad enrollment, and a 7% budget cut -- and wanted to scream.
