I feel like there is this huge case of AI derangement syndrome going on, people are saying shit like 'genAI isnt ML' and 'nobody even uses or likes LLMs!!' and its so divorced from reality I take psychic damage. You just hate capitalism!! LLMs are not the root of modern evil!!!!

Matty sucks, but this is all a drop in the bucket compared to stuff like beef production. Training an AI model from scratch uses about as much water as raising one (1) beef cow.

We now have audited data on water consumption for AI.
Over the 18 month lifespan of Mistral Large 2, a 128B model, all water usage (including chats, training; hardware & data centers) took as much water as 678 US households use yearly.
Each additional query is 45 mL. (Fixed a conversion error)

Hormone Replacement Therapy has been demonstrated to reduce suicidality in trans youth by over 70%. If insulin were to be made illegal tomorrow, a smaller percentage of Type 2 Diabetics would die than the equivalent proportion of trans youth deprived of Hormone Replacement Therapy.
Fun fact: Depending on the country, between 8% to 20% of type 2 diabetics are dependent on insulin for treatment of their condition. Im 2022, over 60% of trans Americans surveyed reported undergoing some form of medical transition, including hormones or surgeries.
