Maev grew up in the palace. She only got to see her mother in the mornings when her mother wasn't working as a courtesan. Madam Diya helped raise her, but the person she learned most from was her best friend Namura, who shared all her books, lessons, and toys with her.

2. She turns eighteen in three months. Once she's eighteen, she'll go from a courtesan-in-training to real courtesan.
3. She had a plan to get out of it, but it crashes and burns in the third chapter.

"You are literally the last person I would ever want to talk to," I finally said, pulling away my eyes away from her in order to save myself before I tumbled head-first into that deep, dark brown gaze.

"I know. But you're going to do it, anyway." I felt a sense of satisfaction when her words came out breathless. There was a bewitched look to her expression that made me feel powerful and in control for the briefest of moments.

I snorted. "No, I'm not."

"You will if you don't want more than these windows destroyed. I could collapse this house on top of you," Charlotte said, her voice going cold. She meant it. The idea of that made me shiver.

"You wouldn't," I snapped, but with the way she was looking at me, I wasn't actually sure.

There was a real threat to her words when she spoke next. “I would and I will. One house, one girl for four of my safe houses? Feels like a fair trade."

I was glad when my voice didn’t shake, that I showed no fear in responding to her. "Get to the point."

"I want you to work with me. I meant that." She crossed her arms over her chest, becoming all business. There was something particularly sexy that radiated off of her when she was being dead serious. I chose to ignore that thought.

"No," I said flatly. "I hate everything about you."

"You don't hate the way I kiss," she suggested.

“Yes, I do. Why do you think I ran?”

“Do you really want me to answer that question?” she asked in amusement.

“... No.” I said after a pause, hating that my cheeks had gone hot.

Lucian and Auðunar are trying to be intimate for the first time, but Lucian is nervous because of past trauma. Auðunar takes care to check in and make sure he’s okay.
(That one phrase is in bold bc it’s a rough draft quick hand for me that it’s being said in another language)

As I watched, my heart raced. Nerves were cropping up, for I had never done this with anyone else other than Tobias. My mind threatened to replace this moment in time with that horrible night again, and I did not want that to happen. I was safe, safe on this bed. I was safe underneath Auðunar. I needed to prove that to my mind once and for all.

“Lucian?” Auðunar must have noticed a change right away. “Are we still alright?”

I nodded. “I’m just nervous. I…” I sighed. “I know you won’t hurt me. I just need to hear that from you right now.”

His gaze softened, and his cleaner hand held my face. “I will take care of you,” he assured me at a whisper. “You are the light of my life, Lucian.” He leaned down to kiss my brow. “I love you.”

I released a shaky breath as I smiled. “I love you.” I kissed his lips.

“I will keep you safe,” he then said. “No harm will come to you.”

I nodded, and my smile had not once wavered. “I trust you, Auðunar.”

Maev is motivated not to die like her mother. So she'll do whatever she can to get her own power and freedom.

She doesn't want to become a courtesan only because of the obvious reasons. She's lived her life waiting for others to have time for her, now she's making time for herself.

The main character is Maev, a seventeen-year-old courtesan-in-training. She's loyal, got grit, and resilient. But she has flaws too: overly confident, never wants to ask for help, and keeps too many secrets.

Oh, and falling for those she isn't supposed to.

My MC is inspired by Joan-Of-Arc. Historical bad-ass feminist who convinced the king of France that she could save the country—but only if she got to wear pants. She was then burned at the stake and forced to wear woman's clothes again.

He's a simple man: never lived up to the glory of his brother, abused by his mother, and infested with a spirit. All he wants to do is prove that you can be better than his brother ever was...problem is, the spirit infecting him makes him crave despair.

DRAFTING.
I spend months throwing words down that I know are bad and have to accept it. Being a perfectionist and drafting do not go together. With that said, there is a certain 'high' I get every once in a blue moon during drafting that is so worth it.

So glad I get to use my new WIP more. More words mean more snips.

I avert my gaze. The king has been getting worse and worse over the last few months. The Tetrad’s Oath promised that if a descedent of Han Khanj, the first king born under the four shards—flame, wind, water, and stone—was in power, that the gods themselves would govern Khanj and keep them safe from the spirits.
If the gods knew about his condition, was that why the spirits were behaving strange? The longer the king stayed in power, would it only get worse? Namura just needs three months until the crown was hers.
