Unless Congress acts swiftly, millions of Americans who purchase their health care coverage on the individual market will experience sticker shock when they reenroll for 2026 coverage or receive their first bill for next year. CAP's Emily Gee explains: https://ow.ly/aiMx50X4kWl
Health Insurance Premium Costs Will More Than Double for Millions of Americans Unless Congress Acts
If enhanced tax credits expire, net premiums for those receiving financial assistance to purchase health insurance would rise 136 percent on average in 2026.

And insurers (and marketplaces) are supposed to send letters notifying current enrollees of premium increases that *arrive* no later than November 1.

The larger-than-usual downward revision last month was in large part driven by a negative skew in the job growth distribution among late reporting firms. That’s unusual, but it’s happened before when the pace of job growth slows rapidly. This print is more evidence that was the case

I know I'm going to get this question a lot today, so here's my answer: Yes, I do still trust the data coming out of the BLS -- but with all the same caveats that always apply when trying to measure a changing economy in real time.

In a single act, Trump is undoing significant portions of the health coverage gains of the last 60 years.
Percent of people without health insurance, going back to 1963. Huge declines following the creation of Medicare and Medicaid, down to roughly 12%. Creeps back up to 15%. Then comes the ACA, down to 9%. Creeps back up a little. Then comes Biden improvements to the ACA, down to 8%. The "Big Beautiful Bill" pushes it back up to 12%.

"What would happen if Powell were fired? In May, Goldman Sachs economists looked at unscheduled leadership changes in central banks around the world and found inflation was 1 to 2 percentage points higher two years later with no benefit to growth."
Firing Powell Would Shatter the Economy’s Inflation Defenses
Without independence, the Fed couldn’t be trusted to give priority to low inflation over the president’s other priorities.

They're not even pretending to do economic modeling. They're just... making stuff up.

It's the like the cubic model but for the federal budget.

Congress is poised to pass one of the most destructive economic bills in generations. It will gut Medicaid, slash food aid for families, shutter rural hospitals—just to give tax breaks that will go overwhelmingly to the wealthy. It is a staggering upward redistribution of income. 1/

We're in a weaker place for a future recession. OBBBA makes biggest cuts ever to Medicaid & SNAP, programs that are automatic stabilizers. As incomes fall, more people qualify for health coverage and food assistance, helping them and our economy recover. www.americanprogress.org/article/shif...
Shifting SNAP Costs to States Would Make Future Recessions Worse
Ending the federal funding guarantee for food assistance would cut benefits and undermine the effectiveness of one of the strongest available tools to combat recessions.

Economic uncertainty abounds. Will Trump’s “liberation day” tariffs activate on July 9? Those tariffs mean consumers face higher costs (~$2500). They also hit both U.S. businesses that rely on imports and U.S. exporters that suffer retaliatory measures. www.americanprogress.org/article/the-...
The Trump Administration’s Approach to Trade Abandons American Exporters
The Trump administration’s tariffs, along with its cuts to export promotion programs, have left U.S. businesses at a distinct disadvantage in international markets.

OBBBA also slashes investments needed to meet U.S. energy needs, esp for industries like AI. That will raise household utility bills. It would set us up for a future where the U.S. is less competitive, and dependent on other nations for new technology. www.nytimes.com/2025/07/01/c...
