I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.

18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it.

We made this website to tell our story:

“Now is the time for all Americans to show up for our libraries. Show up and use our libraries. Show up at library and school board meetings to support students’ access to diverse reading materials. Show up when elected leaders are deciding the fate of facts and the freedom to read.”
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has announced that it is arbitrarily dismissing student and parent complaints arising out of public schools’ documented acts of censorship and discrimination.
Our response: Book bans are real.

Good ideas and advice here, but many will require having a circle of other educators acting in solidarity. Now more than other, teachers need community. We have to make time for it.

For Maths fans, 2025 is a square.
45² = 45 x 45 = 2025
Also,
9² x 5² = 2025
40² + 20² + 5² = 2025
My favourite?
1³+2³+3³+4³+5³+6³+7³+8³+9³ = 2025

OUR MISSING HEARTS is not a dystopia, example #597
Thinking of this line from Our Missing Hearts this morning. @pronounced-ing.bsky.social

“It happened so slowly that you might not even notice it at all, like the sky turning from dusk to dark.”
The incoming Trump administration is looking to prioritize deporting Chinese nationals, citing national security concerns.

But having fled their homeland because of political persecution, some reject the notion of being a threat and call it absurd. nbcnews.to/4gELhoX

Something people rarely talk about:

US Teachers have too much face-to-face time in front of students.

In fact, the US has among the highest rates of teacher-to-student face time in the world. It doesn't give teachers enough time to plan, grade, or assess well.

We're doing the most.
What I don't understand is how the United States spends 154 hours on math instruction each year, 20hrs more than the international avg, & 40hrs more than high scoring EU countries like Finland & England. In fact, you'd think there was an inverse correlation between instructional time and outcome. 😵‍💫

Here are the top imports from Mexico, Canada, and China. Additionally, “ In 2022, Mexico supplied 51% of the US's fresh fruit imports by value. For fresh vegetables, Mexico supplied 69% of the US's imports by value.” Thanksgiving be like, “Pass the Canadian potatoes and Mexican asparagus, assholes.”
