The mistake is thinking it’s either the Great Firewall or what the US did. This is a false binary. There is a vast area of action available for democracies to take regarding platforms that is still rights respecting. The fact that the US didn’t do it isn’t an argument for the GFW
Beijing won the argument on social media, sorry. I no longer regard the Great Firewall as a weakness of their model, it’s a reasonable precaution. They weren’t right about free expression generally, but in this particular? Yeah they were right. I wouldn’t let Musk or Zuck in my country either.
I’m so fucking pissed off that they finally made a social technology more powerful than nationalism and it’s conspiracist online fascism!

This is pretty grim. Forget the Online Safety Act, forget EU laws on disinformation. Looks like the Trump White House will regard all foreign regulation of US tech firms as an anti-American trade war. You might call it First Amendment colonialism.

Attended the @ofcom.bsky.social winter conference in London yesterday and it was excellent. Really interesting hearing how different organisations across the UK tackle misinformation, specially how we’re equipping our young people to identify and respond.
