Welcome to all the new people joining! 👋 I’m a public transportation engineer who thinks critically about what car-centric public spaces really mean for our cities, our pocketbooks, and our planet. I regularly share articles about transportation urbanism and stories from my local advocacy work.

Thinking about the time I was checking out the new play street and this swol lifted diesel blows by, slams on its brakes, and reverses back to me.

I’m thinking, “ok, here we go…”

Gruff diesel dude: “That’s a f-ing sweet bike, man!”

I know, my man. I know.

We have a local council person who donates their old campaign signs. Roll on some primer and they’re a perfect canvas for advocacy signs. The kids love them!

Recruiting for my neighborhood bike bus is going…okay. But the apathy is real.

Who’s to say whether they’re good or bad? 🤷

This weekend, SDOT crews delivered hardened protection along the E Yesler Way bike lanes between Boren Ave and 14th Ave, funded by the Seattle Transportation Levy.

"The solution to pedestrian deaths isn't "defensive walking," as NPR says, but investment in public transit. Don't give us advice on how best to play Frogger on roads full of texting drivers, give us buses that give those drivers a safer place to text."

No, Defensive Walking Isn't The Solution For Road Deaths - Jalopnik
It's victim-blaming, it's bull, and it's not the solution we need.

You can fit a ridiculous number of pumpkins on a cargo bike 🎃
A young child sits in a red eBullit cargo bike, his lower half buried under a pile of gigantic orange and white and pink pumpkins. There's three more pumpkins attached to the back rack of the bike. Kiddo and dad are giving thumbs up to the camera before they take off for the ride home.

Do it for the fellas
ndrew.bsky.social
the political policy cure for “male loneliness” is

- more time to hang with the fellas (4 day work week)

- more money to spend with the fellas (higher wages)

- more things to do with the fellas (taxing the rich and building 3rd spaces)

The best “infrastructure” is really boring. In this case, it’s the humble elevator for the win!
mateosfo.bsky.social
Perhaps the coolest thing I've learned from the rapidly-growing YIMBY tent -- the most carbon-efficient electric vehicle is one we've all used our whole lives:

The elevator.

Elevators not only move people under 100% electric power, they dramatically reduce pollution across the entire economy.

So Flint, Michigan gave $1,500 to all pregnant people, plus $500 each month for the first year of the child’s young life.

It saved Flint $6.2 million dollars a year, due to lower rates of rates of prematurity and low birth weight, with fewer corresponding admissions.

The right thing, AND cheaper.

Biking through a city at night can sometimes be a spiritual experience. The glow of traffic lights. The reflections on wet pavement. You notice everything but no one really notices you. It’s perfect.

🧵Quick thread about how dense neighborhoods cultivate community (and FUN!)

My fiancée and I switch off planning date nights. But this week we had to improvise since we are both super busy. I saw on TikTok that a band was playing a free concert on the lake, so we biked over on a whim. It was PACKED.
