If my house burned down, my village zoning code says I legally couldn’t rebuild it. If “preserving neighborhood character” means you can’t recreate the existing built environment, it’s not actually about the “character” of the neighborhood
This is a phenomenal example of how people advocating for the "character of the neighborhood" are often actually advocating to *change* the character to be less dense and more suburban. Which, if you go play with the city's n'hood GIS explorer, is what has happened all over Boston!

If IL wants to continue being a family-friendly state, we need to prioritize housing affordability ASAP

Of all the major cities in the United States, Chicago provides the greatest value, with robust amenities and culture without correlated housing costs. But if Chicago wants to retain that status, some things need to change.

Chicago needs a Chriskindlmarket in every neighborhood next year.

One of my cousins is thinking about bringing his kids to the one downtown in a few weeks. I had to break it to him that it’s so crowded that it’s borderline unsafe, and they should go to the Wrigley one or the Field Museum instead

This post blew up on Twitter, mostly because NIMBY/white nationalist accounts dogpiled on it to express their outrage at poor people and minorities.

I am exhausted
Time to name and shame the Illinois towns that didn’t submit plans to increase affordable housing:

Barrington Hills
Campton Hills
Elmhurst
Inverness
Lake Forest
Oak Brook
Prairie Grove
South Barrington
Geneva
Hawthorn Woods
Lily Lake
River Forest
Third Lake

(continued in replies)
AHPAA was passed more than 20 years ago to spur Illinois’ most expensive communities to build more affordable housing. Despite recent amendments intended to strengthen the law, there’s still much work to be done to achieve the law’s vision.

This is a sad state of affairs. This man’s mom claims he has severe mental illness and needs treatment. Instead, he roamed the streets assaulting people and is now going to prison for 7 years.

There needs to be a better way to provide help to those who need it, even via institutionalization.

All my random politically unaware friends are making Trump/Epstein jokes. You know what they haven’t said? “I heard Hakeem Jeffries promise to lower the cost of groceries”
The usual suspects are telling Dems that Epstein won’t win elections, get back to “affordability” and I think my head might explode. www.offmessage.net/p/force-a-re...

Trump admin Is attempting to massive cut federal transit funds, seeking to:
1–Eliminate transit account, which funds billions of $ in capital expenses for transit agencies
2–Prevent state DOTs from “flexing” funds for transit

These changes, if they occurred, would be devastating for US transit.
POLITICO Pro: Trump administration proposals seek to eliminate transit funding
DOT recently sent two proposals to the White House budget office seeking to pare back transit money.

Pictures don’t do it justice but this is one of the coolest moons I’ve ever seen. Our planet is so awesome.

If you’re not watching moonrises, start watching moonrises. Every full moon will rise around the same time as sunset!

Late notice, but I’m once again declaring a COOL MOONRISE WATCH for Chicago today. 🚨🌕

Go look to the east starting at 4:27pm today 11/5! Skies are looking clear for this supermoon.
🚨🌕 I’m declaring a COOL MOONRISE WATCH for Chicago tonight!

Thanks to (mostly) clear skies and favorable sunset/moonrise times, you may get an opportunity to witness a similar scene to these photos taken by Joshua Mellin in 2021. Look southeast at 8:28 PM!

Happy 2025 moon perigee!

Earlier this evening, the moon was at its closest point to earth in all of 2025. It also happens to be a full moon, which will be peaking tomorrow morning. Close moon + full moon = super moon!

Chicago has perfectly clear skies right now—go out and look!
