So much of academia runs on silent, collaborative service, requiring mutual goodwill to sustain it. That a few universities would sign letters to get them better deals w/ a corrupt administration… I don’t see how those universities survive in the long run. The rest of us just need to say no.

A moment that calls for collective action… to reject this transparent attack on academic freedom.

Trump's higher ed ransom note is here - everyone would have to acquiesce to their unprecedented demands or not be "given priority for grants," plus they can demand "reimbursement" for "violations" www.wsj.com/us-news/educ...

A mechanism to enforce fealty. An attack on academic freedom and democracy

Not in my name. I won’t work for a school, I won’t give a talk at a school, I won’t write a letter or a review for a school, that signs this.

Not to pile on, but this is important & not getting enough discussion in the wake of the vaccine and Tylenol debates! It got me thinking about a piece I wrote about how Dobbs would make it even more difficult to enroll participants who are pregnant or capable of pregnancy in clinical trials…

Totally agree @rickweinmeyer.bsky.social and finally wrote an essay about this topic last year that I had disgracefully neglected in my earlier academic days (and citing your great work!). Available here: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

There is a particular place in my heart for this category of historical photographs: the ones where not even time and/or the medium can stop the dog’s goofy and/or loving personality from shining through
I collect these whenever I can get them.

Shocker. The judge knows he'll be fired if he rules in favor of Mr. Abrego Garcia. The system is rigged.

Immigration judge denies Kilmar Abrego García’s request to reopen case

The judge, who works for DOJ, found “insufficient evidence” that the Trump administration would send Abrego to Uganda.

DHS had said “He will be processed for removal to Uganda.”

And in the process, whites made money selling their homes to desperate black buyers, fled to the suburbs where govt programs lifted them up, and took a lot of the municipal tax base with them, leaving behind cities that spiraled into decay.

But yes, Helen Andrews, they are the Real Victims here.

Whites fled integrating cities because of their own racism, often ruining their old neighborhoods as they left through arson and bombings as well as dropping industrial rezoning and interstate highway placements across once nice areas in a vain effort to build up racial barriers.

As someone who wrote a book literally titled WHITE FLIGHT, I’d just like to say that the argument that *whites* were the victims of violence in neighborhood transitions is so laughably racist it’s almost insane.

To put that in perspective, in Canada at $50k salary, you pay about $15k a year in taxes. For only $3k more in taxes we get 2 forms of pension, unemployment insurance, Healthcare and fund both federal and provincial governments... US is a giant ponzi scam

I was sent this by a Georgian this morning. 2025 premiums vs 2026 premiums for someone making $65k a year.

Republicans in Washington did this.

This is what I'm fighting to stop. This is what’s at stake in this shutdown fight.

If you live in Illinois, we need your help.

This will take less than five minutes and will truly pressure your local elected officials to stand with the people rather than ICE.
katmabu.bsky.social
That’s why I need to ask everyone in Illinois for a favor.

Contact your elected officials TODAY and tell them to stand with the people — not ICE — for a press conference demanding transparency + legality this Friday at 1930 Beach Street, 9AM.

Here’s a template: docs.google.com/document/d/1...

We are a government ruled by viral video fiat now.

You aren't even allowed to research which viral video has whipped the regime into a mania and how they came to believe it, because the research of the systems themselves is viewed as "censorship."

This how you end up randomly invading Portland.

Portland doesn’t need the military. Portland has its own defenses.
The Unipiper, a Portland institution, shown here wearing utilikilt, coconut shell bra, and Darth Vader mask with brightly colored snorkel, while riding a unicycle and carrying a beach ball and, of course, trademark flaming bagpipes.

100%.

And fame where you’re lauded as smart and heroic for going against the “corrupt experts“ is probably especially appealing for folks on the more grandiose & narcissistic side of the personality scales.

Sure. I’m saying that it matters that no one on the paper had that domain specific knowledge.

And to be totally fair, I think he messed up here. I don't think he's a grifter or nefarious actor on the scale of RFK Jr and his HHS cronies.

But if he'd have recognized the limitations of his knowledge and understanding (and maybe not been a paid expert in a trial) we might not be here.

WAY easier to throw out nutty ideas that people want to hear (eg, covid stuff) than to do the hard work of actual science and weighing complex tradeoffs.

NGL though, at the time it nearly broke me. Prasad is quite a lesson in some people are just bad actors who sometimes pick the right side for a moment.

My take: when prestige and attention and status among scientists was tied to causal inference methods, he was aligned with that. As soon as the opportunity to gain more power and attention came along, he dropped causal inference like a hot potato and ran with the contrarian tide!

It’s the doctors who acted as their defense attorneys, shielding them from all criticism.
