Especially in light of the shutdown of @wcsb.bsky.social yesterday, it's important to know that college radio IS thriving and plays a vital role in many students' lives. Thanks to @emwhitenoise.bsky.social for this great piece that takes a closer look at why Gen Z is excited about college radio.

College radio stations are seeing a surge in student interest.

Stations that once struggled to fill airtime are now overflowing with student DJs.

I spoke to 7 college radio stations across the U.S. to understand what is driving the revival:

Under state socialism, estrada, aka pop music, was a state-sanctioned & state-managed phenomenon. Therefore, capitalism is not a necessary precondition for pop music to exist, whatever Western-centric accounts may claim.
Estrada
by Polly McMichael
In everyday language the term can also designate a spectrum of popular music, with similar vagueness and elasticity as in the use of the word ‘pop’ in contemporary English (this borrowing too has permeated Russian, as the neutral term pop-muzyka [pop music] and the more dismissive popsa). When used of music, the designation estrada frequently acts as a marker of otherness: by default, estrada has the status of the type of music that is too mainstream, too outmoded, too kitsch-laden – and the most tainted by its status as officially sanctioned Soviet entertainment – to be credible.

so much formerly public info is disappearing that i deeply wish there was a search engine that combined the active WWW with the full text contents of the @waybackmachine.bsky.social, or even just a good way to search the latter. (or maybe there is? couldn't find anything easy/functional.)

not sure what knocks me out more: that 86-year-old peter stampfel's new album is weird/wise/heavy/fun & one of my fave things he's made or that he actually reinvents folk music (again), preserving '50/'60s ad jingles & setting aphorisms/prayers to music. peterstampfel.bandcamp.com/album/song-s...

i think tracks made fully using gen AI should be clearly labeled in ways that actually serve the avg user -
giving labels/distributors the ability to opt-in to submit metadata disclosing use of AI to be added to credits is a start but still far away from what’s needed

PMBiP is incredibly inclusive, well beyond the "pop" label. I see your point abt corporate media but there are fewer publishing constraints in academia & still pop writing & the economic don't mix. Pop genres cross commercial/not-for profit divides so pop music writers should too. We agree on that.
