We draw on @maxczollek.bsky.social and @mamjahid.bsky.social 's work to show how claims of historical responsibility in Germany's Feminist Foreign Policy towards colonialism sustain coloniality /1

Happy b’day, “American Idiot” — released as a single 21 years ago today, and written in the wake of the Iraq War.

“The country had gone into a war based on lies,” said Billie Joe Armstrong, “and no one seemed to care. .. It was a song that came from a very honest, pissed-off place.”

Research article "Claiming Historical Responsibility? The Persistence of Coloniality in German Feminist Foreign Policy" by Karoline Färber & Madita Standke-Erdmann.
Abstract begins: Recently, former colonial powers in the Global North have begun addressing their colonial pasts through their foreign policies. Some of these states pursue a feminist foreign policy (FFP). However, to date, only one FFP makes explicit mention of colonial legacies: that of Germany, adopted in 2021. How does German FFP discourse address this and what political work does this do? Contributing to critiques of coloniality in FFP, we analyze the discursive representation of Germany’s colonial past in foreign policy texts since 2021. Drawing on the socio-critical concepts theater of reconciliation by Max Czollek and remembrance superiority by Mohamed Amjahid, we find that the discourse powerfully establishes gendered notions of caring, responsible, and reflexive German statehood.

practices of restitution and reconciliation all too often are tied to a 'prosperous future', sidelining justice and prioritising German economic benefit. Thus, coloniality remains a part of Germany's FFP, contributing to what @maxczollek.bsky.social coined a "theater of reconciliation". /5
erdfraeuleinma.bsky.social
Emphasizing a 'shared history' with formerly colonised states, the discourse violently erases legacies and ongoing expressions of German histories of violence. Historical responsibility with a feminist veneer becomes a vehicle to create the impression of a responsible German state. Yet, /4
erdfraeuleinma.bsky.social
We find that feminist principles of care and listening - core elements to FFP - serve to stabilise a historically responsible German Self that is a champion in reckoning with its past; a notion that @mamjahid.bsky.social calls "remembrance superiority". /3
erdfraeuleinma.bsky.social
To date, Germany's FFP remains the only one mentioning its colonial history and the need to overcome postcolonial hierarchies in its foreign policy. How, then, did German FFP mobilise historical responsibility narratives - a central element to post-1945 German foreign policy? /2

My mom and stepdad are from the same diaspora group as Zohran Mamdani’s dad (same like “my stepdad was kicked out of the same town and knows some of his classmates”) and apparently the New York Times doesn’t understand how diaspora works, so I am going to tell you a little about my mom’s people!

“When it comes to governing, sex is not an input, with a predefined meaning, determining the state’s rules. It’s an output, a creation of those rules, reverse-engineered to fit what an agency needs sex to do.”

@paisleycurrah.com reminds us how “sex” is a contingent political and legal category.
