Killer Instinct (2 years later) was a way more polished approach to the Mortal Kombat formula, with smoother SGI-rendered character frames and some genuinely interesting new characters and moves.

Me and my college friends were Street Fighter 2 people. When Mortal Kombat came out in arcades, it was painful - stiff anims and clunky controls. Seemed like it was using gore to make up for all its obvious shortcomings.
