This moment from our latest episode with science writer @edyong209.bsky.social is 🔥

We asked Ed — how do we talk up the benefits of science in the face of government cuts? He told us that's the wrong approach. 🧪

To be clear, there are no data that provide a link between short-term use of Tylenol during pregnancy and autism. In fact, one of the best prospective studies w/ sibling controls, if anything, pointed to a protective effect for use less than 7 days

@juliametraux.bsky.social is looking for scientists and medical doctors to discuss how inflammation is being misused under the MAHA umbrella. #academicsky #medsky #sciencesky #immunology #publichealth #hiscisky

I'm starting to look into how inflammation is being misused by MAHA types in a way that very much distracts from chronic illness-inflammation problems people actually have. If you're an academic, doctor, immunologist etc with thoughts on this, please be in touch at [email protected]

I listened to Bhattacharya on Steve Bannon's "War Room" podcast.

If you want to know how it went, see the following email that I just sent.

1/13
Dear Dr. Bhattacharya:

I have listened to your performance on the “War Room” podcast with Steve Bannon. The segment begins with a discussion of Secretary Kennedy’s recent cancellation of $500M worth of contracts related to mRNA vaccines.

You say “You can’t have a platform where such a large percentage of the population distrusts the platform as we use it for vaccines and expect it to work.” Later, you make comments that might explain why a large segment of the percentage distrusts this platform. For example, you say that the vaccine was not protective against contracting COVID and cite your own case on COVID after being vaccinated. However, you fail to cite the evidence for the clinical trials that led to the Emergency Use Authorization.

This NIH grant Multi-Year Funding ploy really makes you wonder what equally obscure and equally harmful stuff Vought is advancing across all the other functions of federal government, doesn’t it?

Some journals are claiming that you need to pay big $$ for gold open access to comply with NIH's new public access policy. FYI that is total bs. You can comply by depositing the Accepted Manuscript into PubMed Central on the Date of Publication without embargo. Pass it on.

NEW: In an unprecedented move, the NIH will soon disinvite dozens of scientists about to take positions on advisory councils that make final decisions on grant funding.

NIH staff were told to select others aligned with the Trump administration and told to expect placements by political appointees.
Exclusive: NIH to dismiss dozens of grant reviewers to align with Trump priorities
The move would undo years of work, leaving advisory councils understaffed, and without the full expertise needed for reviews.

How has stroke research evolved, and where is it headed? In today's episode, physician-scientist @marionbuckwalter.bsky.social shares how decades of scientific discovery shaped what we know about stroke and why continued research is key to future progress.

Being part of the myelin field has been the most rewarding aspect of my scientific career ❤️
stanfordbrain.bsky.social
Stanford research by Dr Barres changed our understanding of myelin—once seen as static insulation, now linked to learning & memory. Learn how @michellemonje.bsky.social, @erinmgibson.bsky.social, @bradzuchero.bsky.social & others continue to shape the field: neuroscience.stanford.edu/news/underst...

How bad will it be? Catastrophic.

Proposed cuts to #NSF, #NIH, and #NASA will set the US R&D landscape back 25 yrs+, cause economic and job loss now, and undermine innovations to come.

But, this is the WH's *proposed* budget.

Speak up now before it is too late.

(inflation adjusted $-s below)
NSF, NASA and NIH budgets per year, inflation adjusted from 2000-2025 along with the proposed cuts. NSF includes research component only. Massive cuts across all sectors, well below support spanning 25 years.

85 percent of children diagnosed with cancer are alive at least five years later, according to the National Cancer Institute. Survivors can face lifelong complications from their treatments — something oncologists are working to improve.
More kids are beating cancer. Improving the rest of their lives is next.
“There’s an entire population of kids who didn’t exist before. Now we need to figure out how to best support them,” one expert says.

For anyone not familiar with GRFPs: these are fellowships awarded TO THE STUDENT. They're NOT awarded to an institution or tied to a particular project. Many GRFPs are earned with an application written before a student has submitted any grad school applications.

According to a 2021 report, the University of California system:

• generated $82B in economic activity in California

• supported 529K jobs in the state

• generated $21 in economic output for every $1 received

Public divestment from higher ed makes no sense, even in the narrowest economic terms.

There is a false dichotomy drawn between "the ivory tower" and "the real world," and I'm here to report that in a post-industrial society, your real-world economy absolutely hinges on the university.

University towns are factory towns. Universities drive economic activity, not the other way around.
